All members of the BPS are welcome to the next Digital Group meeting on Monday 8 October. As usual we will take a look at the presentations brought by members either as prints or projected images, these can be for just showing off what you have been doing or inviting criticism or praise from others or to raise questions on photographic problems you may be struggling with. Please bring projected images in jpg format (size does not matter but sRGB colour profile to get the colours projected correctly) on a flash drive in a folder of your name.
We will also take a look at image processing using Adobe Camera Raw software. Most cameras manufactured in the last ten years or so are capable of taking pictures in both JPG and Raw format simultaneously and it is vital to know that Raw format offers much better scope for enhancing an image than JPG. Adobe has five video tutorials, five minutes each, on the subject and I hope you will look through them before the meeting (your homework!) to get some idea or just refresh your skills. We can take a look at a couple of them at the meeting and supplement them with a short talk by our well experienced member Pete McCloskey who will walk through the typical process.
Downloading the list of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom CC tutorials.
If you have not already downloaded the lists from the links published a couple of week ago in this newsletter, the following new Dropbox links will take you to the two web pages I have created. They must be downloaded (click on the Download button in top right corner) and saved as files on the desktop or an easily accessible place on your computer, these can then be opened in a web browser. No-one needs to subscribe to Dropbox to download these pages. I have spot checked the links on the pages but cannot guarantee there are no glitches, please let me know if you find any.
When clicking on the two download links above, you may find that you are presented with a page of gobbledygook. However, in the top right-hand corner of your screen you will see the Download link, click it!
If you are having problems, please email me ( a.chauhan@blueyonder.co.uk ) to send you the lists directly or see me at the DI meeting.

The next meeting of the Studio Group will be on Monday 22 October and will be for beginners in studio work.
The model will be a circus performer with a range of costumes. There will be a limit of 6 photographers for a 2 hr session starting at 10.30am. The cost will be between £10 and £15. If this beginners' session is oversubscribed there will be a second beginners' session in the afternoon. If numbers permit, the afternoon will be open to advanced photographers.
To sign up for this please visit the doodle poll here. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and Nick will close the poll when enough photographers have signed up. It is important that once you have signed up for the event that you add a comment to include your email address and mobile number, so that Nick can contact you to make final arrangements.

Digital Projected Image - Permanent Collection
|
The following is from Pete McCloskey:
As you know Gordon Stirrat manages our Print Permanent collection. We do have some transparencies in our archive, however we have now decided for form an archive of DPIs.
We already have an image bank of DPIs which achieved HC or higher from our bi-monthly competitions which we use as a base from which we select our entry for inter-club competitions.
The aim of the Permanent Collection is to have copies of the Society’s better work together with representative work from our longstanding members.
Barry Mead and I have made a selection from these images which will form the basis of our PDI collection. Currently they are in 1400 pixel JPEG format.
However for our archive we would like to store them as TIFF files. TIFF files form a better record and it will enable the Society to produce prints from the files at some future date if required.
The work will be stored on two hard discs, held at different secure locations, not at the Clubrooms.
Therefore we will approach members for copies of files in TIFF format. If members do not wish to supply TIFF files we still have the JPEGS.
Obviously some work we hold is from people who are no longer members of the Society, so we will make do with the JPEG files.

Do you need some print boxes?
As our prints accumulate from time to time each of us needs to buy some more print boxes. The supplier is Nomad Cases (www.nomadcases.co.uk) and there is a discount of 10% if we order 10-24. The cost of carriage is the same whatever the size of the order so each of us saves on that too.
The print boxes usually used by the club are Nomad Heavy Duty 21x17x4 inches that, before any discount, cost £27.00 each plus £3.00 for a pair of webbing handles (all incl. VAT). If you wish to join in a bulk purchase please contact me at g.m.stirrat@gmail.com or speak to me at the club next Wednesday stating which boxes you wish to buy and how many. You can view them on the web site.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.
|
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
|
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address. |
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
|
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it
would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that
she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue
to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol
know.
