Pecan trees are native to the United States. Thomas Jefferson even planted them at his home, Monticello. Pecan trees are in the hickory family. They can grow over a hundred feet tall, and can live to be 300 years old.
The US produces almost all the pecans in the world -- and Georgia is the leading pecan producing state.
The nuts of the pecan have a rich, buttery flavor, and can be eaten fresh or used in cooking. Possibly their most famous starring role is in Pecan Pie -- but here at Millie's we'd vote for Pecan Pancakes!
