Mayor's Office: We Serve LA

We want to do our part and keep you off the roads during the 405 partial-closure on the 16th, so we’re sure you’ve noticed, L.A. Works Day is scheduled for July 30th. More than a thousand community and corporate volunteers will join together for a large-scale service project in Leimert Park to support the community’s efforts to make this hidden landmark an incubator for the continued development and preservation of African American art, culture, entrepreneurship and economic development in Los Angeles. ARE YOU IN? MORE >>>

Leimert Park Beat
Every Sunday, Leimert Park in South Central Los Angeles has drummers thrumming rhythmus measures. Afro-Caribbean style combat dancers practice a couple of yards away and on the grass sits a casual audience occasionally standing from their reclined positions to dance, feeling the sounds - almost entranced by the beats. Among the many projects this L.A. Works Day, a team of volunteers will build several families of drums. The drums will then be used to teach local children about African drumming and will be available for the kids to join into the Sunday drum circle. For stories about the significance of drumming and one of the village’s drum shops, called West of Africa, click MORE >>>

Leimert Spotlight: Launching a Performance Arts Center
Fernando Pullum is a talented musician who has performed with the Temptations, played on Saturday Night Live, and been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Of all his accomplishments, however, and with those that were previously listed being just a few, establishing a performing arts center for children in Leimert Park Village has been one of his greatest sources of pride. As Fernando explains it, during his youthful years many people expected him to follow a certain life path, one of incarceration. Such an expectation had nothing to do with who he was as a person, but the environment in which he grew up. However, there was one thing in particular that was key in helping Fernando defy such expectations: the trumpet. MORE>>>

Summer Intern Spotlight
We’re excited to introduce a few more enthusiastic volunteers whose efforts at L.A. Works this summer have increased our ability to reach corporate sponsors and nonprofit partners. Sophia Dutra is a second year at UC Berkeley, focusing on public health and media studies, and McKenna Morey is from Saint Louis, Missoui, and currently majoring in Business Administration at USC. Sophia and McKenna have dedicated their time helping to secure in-kind donations for L.A. Works Day and our 20 for 20 campaign! Peo Khoo, a senior at USC majoring in biology, has joined our program team to help connect volunteers to our monthly projects. Peo is the president of Alpha Phi Omega, the service fraternity on campus.

Deloitte Impact Day @ San Pascaul
Check out the recent Patch story and video of over 300 Deloitte volunteers who paused their busy work schedule to take part in a beautification project at San Pascual Avenue Elementary School early last month... Volunteers took on various projects throughout the campus, including mural painting, landscaping, light construction and library organization. In the crowd was San Pascual alumni and Deloitte employee Ray Estorga, who says he jumped at the chance to come beautify the school he attended. “It’s a wild and crazy thing that I’m here giving back to my school like almost 20 years later,” said Estorga. “It touches the heart, you feel like a kid all over again.” MORE>>>

Call to Action
  Adventures with Apes
Monkey around with some endangered animals! L.A. Works volunteers help maintain the grounds and ensure a safe and healthy environment for the gibbons at the Gibbon Conservation Center. After clearing brush and trimming trees to guard against fire, assisting with grounds maintenance, and building the wooden structures that house the gibbons, volunteers get a tour of the facility to learn about the gibbons. STOKED about Community Gatherings
L.A. Works is partnering with The People’s Fleet on their Community Gathering events to showcase a LA-specific social issue and relevant opportunities for community action.  Through these gatherings, like-minded people will be brought together to utilize their time and talent toward creating positive community change in Los Angeles. At the first event on July 19, TPF will screen a short documentary about mentoring in Los Angeles, host an influential keynote speaker that will address the subject of mentoring, introduce everyone to Stoked Mentoring, and share about how they can get involved as a mentor here in Los Angeles.
