The
African American Men and Boys Task Force of The Heinz Endowments
is conducting a media audit, which will analyze how local Pittsburgh
newspapers and television newscasts frame stories about African
American men and boys.
The purpose
of this project is to determine what stories exist about African
American males; how these stories are framed; how those frames
affect African American men and boys; and what can be done to
develop new stories and frames that can change the way African
American men and boys are viewed by others and themselves.
As part of
the audit, the Endowments is seeking people to participate in
an electronic survey designed to gain a community perspective
on the local Pittsburgh media’s portrayal of African American
men and boys. We hope to survey a minimum of 400 participants,
asking a series of questions to better inform the results of the
three-month media audit. This survey is an important adjunct to
the media audit itself and will provide insight into how affected
individuals perceive the images presented by the media, as well
as how these images affect their views of themselves.
For participants,
we are targeting African American men and women 15 and older who
live, work or study in the Pittsburgh region. They will not be
solicited for any other reason. Their responses will not be released
for any other purposes and will be reported in the aggregate,
so no one will be identified individually.
The foundation
also will be offering twenty $25 American Express gift cards in
a drawing, which individuals completing the survey will have the
opportunity to enter.
The results of the survey and the overall audit and analysis will
be released in the fall.
The
survey can be accessed by CLICKING
HERE and the survey should require no more than 15 to 25 minutes
to complete.
