John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

HE DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE

Memorial Day. A day for remembering. For remembering those who have died, especially those who have died in behalf of others, died under fire in far off places that we might live in a land of freedom, died that friends and strangers need not live under the boot of tyranny. We do right to remember and to give thanks to God for those who have made that final sacrifice of devotion for friends and country. Jesus says we can give none greater. No one has greater love than the one who lays down his life for his friends.

Only the love of Christ surpasses that of the person who willingly gives up his own life for friendship's sake. For Jesus laid down His life for us while we were still His enemies. And He did this to give us the greatest freedoms of all: freedom from sin, death, and hell. Jesus died that we might live forever. This unlimited love of Christ has been the power source of many a man's love for friends and country, and the strength of many more who kneel at gravesides today.
