At midday on Tuesday the 12th of April, the Children’s Book Council of Australia released their short list for the 2011 Book of the Year Awards.  Tony has already started reading all of the short listed books in the Picture Book and Younger Reader’s categories as we lead up to our 2011 Book Week tours. This year will see us performing shows based on one book from each of those categories. Tony’s enjoying poring over the work of new authors & illustrators, as well the work of the following authors we have performed before.  Do you remember any of these Tony Bones shows?
  • We have gotten to know Tohby Riddle well over the years as we have created shows based on his books quite a few times: Nobody Owns the Moon in 2009, Irving the Magician in 2006 and The Singing Hat in 2001.  His new book, My Uncle’s Donkey, has also earned its way onto the short list this year for “Picture Book of the Year”. Good one Tohby!
  • Bill Rules by Elizabeth Fensham is the sequel to Matty Forever, which we performed last year, and it is on the list of notable books in the “Younger Reader’s” category.  Congratulations Liz!
Other authors and illustrators we’ve worked with before on the “Notable Books” list include:
  • Catherine Bateson (we performed Being Bee)
  • Elise Hurst (we performed The Night Garden)
  • Leigh Hobbs (we performed Horrible Harriet)
  • Stephen Michael King (we performed Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat)
  • Jan Ormerod (we performed Water Witcher)

Congratulations to all of these artists we’ve had the joy of working with before, as well as to all the other authors & illustrators on the list this year. Hooray for Australian books!!!

Farewell to Schumann the Shoeman
Our 2010 Picture Book show got one last performance recently at “The Big Read”, run by the Geelong Children’s Book Council.  We put so much work into our book shows and are sad that they often only get performed for three short months on the Book Week tour, so it was a joy to dust off last year’s Picture Book show and present it again at a public performance.  A wonderful crowd of children and their parents enjoyed our presentation of "Schumann the Shoeman" by John & Stella Danalis before settling down to read a book together.  Here’s what one of the event organisers had to say about it:

“I'd like to give the highest possible praise for the standard of Amy and Michael's work presenting 'Schumann the Shoeman' at Geelong on Sunday. It was absolutely outstanding and was the perfect presentation for the CBCA event - celebrating families reading together.  It was a great 'thankyou' to families who know that reading together is important and fun, and a wonderful surprise to those who had not seen your company's work before. As we over heard one child say during the performance 'This is REALLY great!’  Everyone was mesmerized.”
Chris Oughtred, Geelong Children’s Book Council.

Fractured Fairytale Show "Good Things Come in Threes" launches in May
Our Term 2 school tour begins in Tasmania this year, including the premiere of our brand-new Fractured Fairytales Puppetry Show.  The cast are driving the Tony Bones van on to the Spirit of Tasmania tonight, loaded with sets, props, costumes, and of course their teddy bears to keep them company while they’re away on tour.  They’ll be back after a full week of shows (our first ever sell-out tour of Tassie) to tour Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, ACT and South Australia throughout May and June.  Limited places are still available to see this new show in Term 2! Victorian Premier Ted Bailleu gets behind anti-bullying programs
Bullying is such a prevalent problem in our schools, but it is good to see that teachers, parents and students alike are educating themselves about how to prevent and respond to it.  Victorian Premier Ted Bailleu recently announced a $14.5 million plan to help tackle the issue in schools and workplaces.  See more by clicking here.

Our Anti-Bullying Musical Bully Bull-Ring is designed to work with other anti-bullying programs already at schools as well introducing new ideas to the staff and students. The programs focussed on in the show include the “You Can Do It” and “Better Buddies” principles.  It also includes seven different anti-bullying strategies, presented in short easy-to-remember slogans and songs.  We even have follow up notes and cast albums available to help you continue the conversation with your students.  Here are some comments made by teachers about Bully Bull-Ring:

“Really impressed with the way strategies were revised and reinforced with children.” St Mary’s Catholic School, Bairnsdale VIC

“Awesome practical ideas to implement early on in schooling...absolutely amazing, funny, sensitive, empowering (the BEST PD I have had on ways to beat bullying)...we will definitely be following up with the messages you have presented.” Maranatha Christian School, Officer VIC

“Great show, funny, clever and well put together.  Brings out practical ideas and ways to deal with bullying...children still talking about it and saying the phrases.” Leighland Christian School, Burnie TAS
