Luke 20:14 But when the vine-dressers saw him [the son], they reasoned among themselves, saying, "This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours."
A SURE THING: MAN'S RESISTANCE TO GOD'S GREAT LOVE
Just as the persistence of God's love is a sure thing, so also is man's natural resistance to that love. The vine-dressers spoken of are a picture of the Jews at the time of Jesus who took it upon themselves to kill the very one sent to save them. Even though the Lord had been merciful and patient with them, their hatred of their God took over.
This hatred and resistance to God's love is not limited to a race or time period. By our very nature we resist God and His love. How often have we pushed Him away even after we have become Christians? We have that reaction of the old man even with the new man working within us. How much more so did we resist the Holy Spirit and resist God’s love when we were spiritually dead?
It is a genuine miracle that anybody becomes a Christian or remains a Christian when you consider the odds stacked against him. By nature we consider the Gospel of Jesus to be foolishness. By nature we are enemies of God. By such rejection and rebellion we have killed the Heir, the Lord of glory.
Yes, our obstinate resistance to God is a sure thing, but God's persistent love still conquers. The existence of your faith by the power of the Holy Spirit is the evidence.
