Hello Firstname

Wednesday 22 August

Next Wednesday we welcome Pauline Pentony MA ARPS AFIAP DPAGB who will be presenting her talk called Once a Dancer, Always a Dancer.

Pauline has gained recognition locally and internationally for her dance photography. Her work captures a dancer’s movement and their creativity.
She has been associated with dance and worked with dancers in and around the North East of England for over forty years and photographed them for the last decade. Having been a dancer and choreographer she feels she has a great eye for movement, timing and beauty. So, as a dance photographer, Pauline has a clear understanding of her subject, whilst being a little different from other photographers this path for her seems to be a natural one.

As an artist, Pauline seeks to develop and capture the beauty of dance through the dancer’s techniques and elegance, to capture a dancer in a certain way, but not always to tell a story, yet, to capture that energy and emotion should tell its own story to the viewer. She wants her audience to enjoy and explore her images so as to form their own views and personal opinions.

Her photography is diverse and encompasses a wide range of Performing Arts including experimental dance photography, location and studio photography, commercial dance photography, sport and events.

2018-2019 Competitions
Please note, there are two competition closing dates in September:
5 September - Projected Image Competition Round 1 - Judge: Brian Swinyard MA (photo) ARPS DPAGB EFIAP/b. Don't forget, the revised/updated size requirement - IMAGES SHOULD BE 1600 X 1200 PIXELS - this is to suit the new projector.
29 September - Print Competition Round 1 - Judge: Ed Cloutman EFIAP
For the advanced level only, the competitions will be subdivided into an ‘open’ category and a ‘prescribed’ category. In each round, two submitted images can be in the 'open' category, the subject and style being the free choice of the entrant. The third image submitted must be in the subject or style category specified for each competition. The Projected Image Competition subject is "Letters" and for the Print Competition the subject is "Wood".

BPS Wins PSA Travel Division Inter-Club Competition
We have received the following from Greg Duncan:

The End-of-year Playoff was judged on 8 August at the same time as the Travel Section of the PSA International.
The competition was intense with many excellent images. The results in reverse order are
  • 3rd place with 91 points - Saguaro Camera Club
  • 2nd place with 91 points - Delaware Photographic Society
  • 1st place and Travel Division Champions with 96 points - Bristol Photographic Society
The tie between 2nd and 3rd place was resolved on the basis of the number of high scoring images. Saguaro's highest mark was 12 whereas Delaware scored a 13 and was therefore awarded 2nd place.
I would like to thank all of the clubs in both groups for participating in the competition throughout the season. I would also like to thank the host clubs for their part in making the competition viable - without host clubs there would be no competition.
Registration for this coming season will open on 1 October.

Regards

Dr Greg Duncan, MPSA2, SPSA, EFIAP/s

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

The next meeting of the group will take place on Monday 17th September. It will be the You Tube video night based on improving Black and White images.
Before then, a great opportunity to take some cycling photos as the Tour of Britain race has its 3rd stage based in and around Bristol.
If you would like to meet up on Tuesday 4th September, the stage starts @ 11.30am on the Downs but my early thoughts are to be on Beggar Bush Lane in Failand where the riders get released from the controlled start and get racing. Then just before the finish about 2.30pm, the riders have to come up Rownham Hill and over the Suspension Bridge. If you would like to meet up, please let me know.  mail@dgrierson.co.uk

Left in Clubrooms
Someone left a rather nice umbrella in the clubrooms last week - if you are the owner if this, please see Carol at the next meeting.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
