Dear Nasty Women and Bad Hombres,
Anyone who's paid any attention to events in this bookstore for the past year will have noticed that BookShop West Portal has a feminist streak a mile wide, so when we saw that Picador was publishing the anthology, Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance, and Revolution in Trump's America, our metaphorical hand shot into the air.
We knew immediately that we wanted to host an event to celebrate this amazing anthology!
And, folks, I'm so proud of our line-up for tonight!
First, we've got the two awesome editors of Nasty Women, Samhita Mukhopadhyay and Kate Harding, flying in to join us.
And then we invited three of the most accomplished, most inspiring activists we know.
All of them are making an impact far beyond the Bay Area:
Debra Cleaver is the Founder and CEO of Vote.org.
Vote.org uses technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy.
Even if you can't make it to the event, I urge you to visit their website.
Seriously, I got an "out of office" email from Debra last week that staggered me with the sheer scope of the outreach they're doing!
Dr. Carolyn Jasik is a pediatrician, a wife and a mom.
So how did she end up director for the Women's March for the State of California?
Read her blog post, Accidental Activism: How a regular gal ended up at the center of a 1.1 million person movement.
You will be as impressed and inspired as I am.
I'm so excited to be meeting Carolyn face-to-face!
Finally, you may be one of the innumerable fans of Kate Schatz's books Rad American Women and Rad Women Worldwide, two excellent picture books for rad women of all ages.
Or, you may be one of the insiders who know that Kate is the founder of Solidarity Sundays, a national network of over 100 feminist activist groups focused on resisting the current (un)American administration, as well as the systemic iniquities that existed long before November 8, 2016. And if you are very lucky, you were here the last time Kate visited us.
Okay, I'm confident that you're now as excited as I am about the conversation that we're having at BookShop West Portal this evening.
Folks, the last time we did something like this, it was AMAZING.
I'm not exaggerating.
And everyone in attendance that night left the bookstore feeling empowered, energized and inspired.
Couldn't you use some of that?
Nasty women, gather your girlfriends!
Please come out and join us tonight, October 11th at 7:00pm.
And you bad hombres?
Come support nasty women everywhere and show how enlightened you are!
Share this info with everyone you know.
Post it on social media.
We're going to have a lot of positive energy in the bookstore - I hope to see you there!
Best,
Susan
