Hello Firstname

Wednesday  4 April
Next Wednesday we welcome natural history photographer Peter Whieldon to BPS. Peter will be presenting his talk called A Natural History Evening With Peter Whieldon. Peter is a natural history photographer based in Hampshire and would like to share with you his passion and commitment for wildlife photography. He runs workshops for macro, wildlife, captive and wild owls.
He has spent many years on different projects to achieve some of these photographs. Eight years ago Peter purchased five acres of land, he uses a small area for parking for his work premises and has set the rest aside for a conservation area to be able to give back something we’ve all taken away from nature, their habitat, {his Back Yard}.

Exhibition To Visit
Brief Encounters by Mark Fairhust can be seen at the Goods Shed Tetbury from 1 April to 13 May 2018.
Photographer Mark Fairhurst began his career photographing inanimate objects, from jewellery to plugs, which were used in advertising. Seeing his work, someone told him that if you can make a plug look good, imagine what you can do for people.
It was this that sparked the idea of switching to portraiture and now an exhibition of his work is to be shown at Tetbury Goods Shed in Gloucestershire.
Fairhurst's pictures are usually taken on location and often he has little time to capture the image he wants.
Brief Encounters displays images taken on a one-to-one basis, often only with a short time to prepare the set on location.
"It's a challenge to create a relaxed atmosphere other than in a studio," says Fairhurst. "I would never have thought that I would be in front of so many famous people in my career."
He works in black and white taking inspiration from photographers such as Irving Penn, Jane Bown, David Bailey and Richard Avedon.
"You have to be a psychologist and a photographer doing portraiture," says Fairhurst.
"Connection and the ability to put at ease, that's the key. Lighting is important, but a great portrait comes from good connections at that critical moment in time."

Days Gone By
Many years ago, one of the stalwarts of BPS was a chap called Stan Nicolls, in fact it was Stan (well, his building company) who carried out the conversion work on 12 West Mall to convert it from a disused flat into our clubrooms. Gordon Stirrat is very friendly with Stan's son, who has passed Gordon some old photos of BPS outings in 1956, 1970 and 1971 and wondered if anyone can recognise any of the faces. if you can, please let me know and I'll pass this on to Gordon.

As you can see, I have been able to put names to most of the members in the 1970 photo, although the identity of the gent between Trevor Church and Stan Nicolls eludes me.

Unit 13
This is "Howell has another moan week"!
Last weekend, after nearly 3 years of use, we had the carpets throughout Unit 13 steam cleaned. As a result of this it is apparent that many members are not being careful enough with their coffee/tea during the interval, as a large amount of said beverages appears to have found its way onto the carpet - please try to be more careful with your cups, try to keep them horizontal and not, as has often been seen, at 45 degrees!

One of our biggest disappointments regarding the design of the clubroom is that we didn't have the central column removed when the building was stripped out. However, we didn't and are now stuck with a column that is a bit of an obstacle before the meetings start and during the interval. Members tend to congregate around it, causing a major traffic jam between the main front area and the tea/coffee area. Could members who wish to hold court please try to do this away from the column and leave a clear passage between the front and rear parts of the clubroom.

Prostate Cancer Walk
This is where I unashamedly abuse my position as Newsletter Editor.
As no doubt many of you know, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer (2014) and subsequently successfully treated at Southmead Hospital. Since then, I have been aware of how many of my friends and relatives have been similarly affected. You yourselves will probably know how this disease has touched your own family and friends, quite a few BPS members have been affected (you'd probably be surprised at just how many).
On 17 June, The Bristol March for Men will be held at Blaise Castle and in an attempt to give something back to those who helped and treated me and all the other sufferers, I'm taking part in the 10k walk in the hopes of raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK. If you would like to support this worthy cause (and at the same time get some degree of satisfaction in the knowledge that I will suffer doing this) please follow this link and make a donation. Every donation, however large or small, will go a long way in trying to make diagnosis and treatment of this disease much more effective in the future.

Dates For Your Diary
Until 22 Apr
Hayward Gallery - London. A major UK retrospective of the work of acclaimed German photographer Andreas Gursky. Known for his large-scale, often spectacular pictures that portray emblematic sites and scenes of the global economy and contemporary life, he is widely regarded as one of the most significant photographers of our time.
Driven by an interest and insight into ‘the way that the world is constituted’, as well as what he describes as ‘the pure joy of seeing’, Gursky makes photographs that are not just depictions of places or situations, but reflections on the nature of image-making and the limits of human perception. Often taken from a high vantage point, these images make use of a ‘democratic’ perspective that gives equal importance to all elements of his highly detailed scenes.
Thanks to John Hudson for this

From frozen wastelands and peculiar species, to tropical paradises and fascinating animal behaviour; this year’s selection is a call to action – a plea to band together and protect our fragile planet.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind, providing a global platform that showcases the natural world’s most astonishing and challenging sights.

Swaps: Photographs from the David Hurn Collection. Until 15 April at the National Museum, Cardiff. This exhibition celebrates the major gift of photographs from David Hurn’s private collection and marks the opening of Amgueddfa Cymru’s first gallery dedicated to photography.
Throughout his career as a documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos, Hurn has been an avid collector of photography. Remarkably, he has amassed his private collection by swapping works with other photographers.
The collection comprises approximately 700 photographs by leading 20th and 21st century photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold, Sergio Larrain, Bill Brandt, Martine Franck, Bruce Davidson and Martin Parr, through to emerging photographers such as Bieke Depoorter, Clementine Schneidermann, and Newsha Tavakolian.
The exhibition presents a selection of works that reflect on Hurn’s own career and influences, his eye for a good photograph and the friendships he has developed with photographers along the way.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
