So this week we thought we would home in on the River Thames. At 215 miles it is England’s second longest river (the Severn beats it by 5 miles!), as it flows from a trickle in Gloucestershire to becoming the main artery in the beating heart of London. Despite 50 years ago being declared biologically dead due to hundreds of years of past abuse, The Thames is now considered the
cleanest river in the world that flows through a major city – which is some achievement.
A journey along the river, whether by bike or on foot is really a journey through liquid history from rural countryside with the farming and livestock that brought wealth to the Cotswolds, past the ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford, through the pretty towns and villages of the Chilterns and past castles and palaces that bring over a thousand years of history to life.
Whether it is nature’s bounty or man’s achievements that floats your particular boat, from a short break to a full two week expedition, our Thames holidays really offer everything – and as a bonus it’s mostly flat!
