NEVER A BETTER TIME TO EXPLORE THE THAMES!

Spotlight on the Thames

While sadly we will miss many of our international friends this year, it does mean that some of Britain’s most visited places will be quieter than normal which makes this a great year for the locals to visit (and give the heritage sites and hospitality venues some much needed support).

So this week we thought we would home in on the River Thames. At 215 miles it is England’s second longest river (the Severn beats it by 5 miles!), as it flows from a trickle in Gloucestershire to becoming the main artery in the beating heart of London.  Despite 50 years ago being declared biologically dead due to hundreds of years of past abuse, The Thames is now considered the cleanest river in the world that flows through a major city – which is some achievement.

A journey along the river, whether by bike or on foot is really a journey through liquid history from rural countryside with the farming and livestock that brought wealth to the Cotswolds, past the ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford, through the pretty towns and villages of the Chilterns and past castles and palaces that bring over a thousand years of history to life.

Whether it is nature’s bounty or man’s achievements that floats your particular boat, from a short break to a full two week expedition, our Thames holidays really offer everything – and as a bonus it’s mostly flat!

Best Wishes,

  WALKING THE THAMES PATH
After a photo opportunity at the headstone that marks the source near Cirencester, this 14 night trip offers an amazing array of different landscapes and is surprisingly rural even as it reaches the city.  This is a great trip on which to bring your furry friend, and can easily be broken down into smaller sections.   Explore more

If you prefer to travel on two wheels, this 8-night cycling tour starts in London with a ‘wow is it really possible’ traffic free ride out of London to Hampton Court. Plenty of time to explore Kew Gardens on the way, before your trip takes you to Windsor then through glorious countryside past Henley and on to Oxford to soak up some more culture.  Click here for more

This 10 night cycling tour is mostly flat except for a few slopes in The Chilterns, and self-guided so you can take it at your own pace and spend time exploring the villages, towns and lovely pubs along the route. Break it into 2 sections or spend extra nights exploring Cirencester or Oxford.   This might also be the year to catch that play in London!  Find out more

A JAUNT AROUND OXFORD
For a short break that takes in some cycling along the Oxford Canal, as well as the River Thames, this is a great little trip that visits Blenheim Palace as well as the Thames Meadows and its rural villages.  Or enjoy the slightly longer Riverside Ride from Oxford to Henley stopping in some delightful riverside inns – Choices Choices!
