IAHF List:
Your urgent calls, emails, faxes are STILL URGENTLY NEEDED AGAINST S.3546!! See simple instructions below.
Today (Wednesday December 6th) the Senate was delayed from voting on the bad Adverse Event Reporting bill (S.3546 the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act. They'll probably take it up Thursday or Friday, but if we flood them with enough calls, we MIGHT kill the bill during the lame duck session which ends Friday.
The good news is that House Majority Leader Boehner opposes the House companion bill (HR 6168) and he refuses to put it on the calendar for a vote!! This is very good news for two reasons:
1) We can now focus EXCLUSIVELY on trying to kill just the Senate bill, and
2) Even if we DON'T kill the Senate bill, they'll have to reintroduce the bills again in the next Congress (in January) so this will buy us some time to keep building momentum against it and we may be able to pressure the House into holding HEARINGS on the bill.
(Holding a hearing on the bill might help our side get badly needed language changes into the bill in order to de-fuse the ticking bomb. We should be greatful to those vitamin companies that have broken ranks with NPA (Formerly "NNFA") on this issue. Nature's Plus, Solgar, and Nutraceutical Corp. are 3 huge companies which are all telling Congress that they should not listen to the pharma dominated vitamin trade associations. They're joined by a lot of smaller companies including Life Extension Foundation, Vitamin Research Products, Wellness Resources and others- and our grass roots army keeps growing as awareness builds.)
LETS DIRECT OUR COMPLAINTS TO THESE SENATORS:
1. REID (D) from Nevada: Why? Because he'll be the Senate Majority leader in the next Congress.
2. Hatch (R) from Utah: Why? Because he has sold us out and he needs to know why we are unhappy.
3. Harkin (D) from Iowa: Why? Because he has sold us out just like Hatch has- we used to be able to TRUST both Senators
4. Your OWN Senators- see http://www.senate.gov
All can be called via 202-225-3121 (Capital Switchboard) WHAT TO SAY:
" I oppose S.3546 the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act and urge the Senator to vote against it because it fails to take into account causality. It sets the stage for a dietary supplement to be wrongly blamed for an adverse reaction actually caused by one or more pharmaceutical or OTC drugs taken concurrently. Its a trial lawyers dream.
It would create needless red tape for supplement manufacturers and would do NOTHING to protect consumers- while passing to consumers the burden of paying more for their product.
Hearings are badly needed on this legislation and the language must be changed. Its important to note that some huge vitamin companies do not support the position of the Natural Products Alliance (formerly NNFA). These companies include: Nature's Plus, Solgar, Nutraceutical Corp, Life Extension Foundation, Vitamin Research Products, Wellness Resources and many others."
Additionally, please go here to email a form letter with one mouse click to both Senators and Congressmen on this issue: http://www.lef.org/featured-articles/consumer_alert_130906.htm
Its ok to make your phone calls after hours- switchboard is open 24/7, they'll put you through to voice mail and those calls do get listened to.
Please urge EVERYONE YOU KNOW to ALSO make the calls and send the emails!
