  • Radical Love - The Sufi Heart podcast of Omid Safi
Dear Friends,
For almost 20 years now I have been hosting retreats on community and sustainability, in part because I see the concern for climate change is something that touches everyone. Another part of me believes that true sustainability comes from opening our hearts, so that the love within us includes every being, every creature, every corner of our Mother Earth. As I assemble my calendar for 2020, I find it reflects my own view that spirit, community and a sustainable life are one path. The Dances of Universal Peace have been such a blessing to me and I am in awe of the love energy that ripples out in all directions to the doors of the mystery. The Dances have become an important part of all my conferences and workshops.

In a search for podcasts from a Sufi perspective, I discovered the Omid Safi's Radical Love series, and have been inspired by the clarity of his message. Look below for more on this.

I hope this time of holidays brings strength and joy to you and those you love!

Namaste y'all,
Douglas

Laying a foundation of connection by getting in touch with ourselves in the present moment, through mindful touch and self care, meditation immersed in nature, blended with singing, chanting and Dances of Universal Peace.

I recognize that the most important changes in my life have come about through moments of personal transformation. I am gaining a better appreciation and understanding on the importance of giving the voice from within room to be heard. This is the inspiration behind my Awakening Journey Retreat.

My intention is to share and make available to you... the time, the space, and the tools that have helped me grow and change, that it might offer you an opportunity to feed your soul and inspire you in this journey we call life. May we find peace in our heart, peace in our family, peace in our community, peace beyond our borders.

Limited to 10 people. Special discounts for those who attend Awakening Journey and stay for dances with Bernie the following weekend, plus an extra dance on Wednesday evening. Click here to learn more.

It goes without saying, Bernie's energy is uplifting and inspiring. Joy and communion are the intention and are present in abundance. Join us for what will be a very special weekend!

A number of years back, I felt a call to help bridge the understanding in the West of the Muslim world, a civilization that had centuries of peace, expressed through poetry and art. What incredible synchronicity that music and dance would lead me to the way of the Sufi, the mystical side of Islam.

Allow me to introduce you to Omid Safi and the Sufi Heart podcast. I found it on the Be Here Now Network,  the source for talks by Baba Ram Dass, and American professor turned mystic who inspired myself and so many others to turn toward a spiritual path.

"The measure of what it means to be a spiritual and realized human being is to actually be able to love and serve humanity."

Dr. Omid Safi is a director of Duke University's Islamic Studies Center, and what I find so intriguing is the way he expresses the concept of Radical Love as tied directly to Social Justice. Two of my favorite episodes are Dr. Martin Luther King's Message for Today, and Sufi Heart, a Practice of Love, where he lays out the way to express love, not as an emotion, but as a practice and a pathway for bringing peace to your own heart, and in a series of expanding concentric circles, peace to the world.

  THE HEART OF THE CENTER
  Jan 24 - 27, 2020 Akumal, Yucatan, Mexico

A Dance and deepening retreat with Sky Roshay and Glenda Taylor at Organic Yoga Mexico, a retreat center in Akumal (near Tulum).  Where is our center, and how do we find it in times of stress and turmoil? How do we connect to our heart and move from there as much as possible? Morning and evening Dances, meditation, experiential practices and ceremony, with plenty of afternoon time for relaxing and enjoying the beach or the hammocks.
All vegetarian meals, and one seafood dinner, are included. Akumal is just down the coast from Puerto Morelos, with plenty of time to get there for the start of the Winter Dance Camp. You fly into Cancun and take the bus or shuttle.

$325 for space in one of the houses, and $260 for space in the Yoga Hall (you must bring your own pad and bedding)

Sky Roshay has been leading Dances for over 20 years. She is also a mentor in the Dance lineage, a musician, and periodically a poet. She dives deeply into the merging of spiritual growth with the Dances as a spiritual practice, and has been sharing wisdom about this at camps and in conversation formally for the past several years.

Two more ways to visit The Farm
March 14 & 15 Breema: Embracing the Timeless Moment
An experiential weekend of Body-centered meditation, mindful movement, and nurturing touch, combined with the Breema principles and philosophy with the aim to support a shift from identification with thought, to a taste of our timeless nature. My friend and fellow Farm member Katherine Correa found her calling through a path of self healing after a devasting injury. We have been working together, using her techniques to help people coming in for dances and workshops to establish a grounding center and deeper sense of inter-connecetion. She will be my partner for Awakening Journey.

I hope you'll make the effort to take a firsthand look at The Farm during one of my GreenLife Retreat Weekends, and that it will inspire you to pursue your dreams and find your chosen path!

Speaking Engagements
At the same time, I recognize that I can reach a lot more people if I go outside the community. One of my goals is to speak at colleges and universities where I can talk to young people about Right Livelihood, Service, and Finding Sanity in an Insane World. This is a time when people need to hear an uplifting message of hope.

If you are part of an organization, event, or school (or you just want to learn more about my life's work), I invite you to visit my web site www.douglasstevenson.com, where you'll find information on my lecture topics and how to bring me to speak in your area. Thank you for your interest, and your support. I hope to see you down the road.
