NEWS FOR CAT LOVERS
===================================

You've heard of Hemingway cats, right? They're the ones with
six or even seven toes on the front paws, and occasionally an
extra one or two on the rear paws. It is said they originated at
famous author Ernest Hemingway's home in Key West, Florida
in the 1930s.

He was well known for his love of cats and usually had several
dozen of them living with him. Though Hemingway died 50 years
ago, and his home has become a museum, there still are about
50 cats living on the premises. Most of them have extra toes.

However, recent research has unlocked the mystery and it turns
out that polydactylous cats - the ones with the extra toes - did
not actually orginate with Hemingway. Geneticists have located
the gene that dictates how proteins behave during formation of
limbs in mice, humans.... and cats!

CAT FOOD NEWS
===================================

If you feed your cat a raw meat diet, here are some tips to
be sure you do so safely. While this article is about the
hairless Sphynx cat, the advice on food preparation applies
to all of us.

Petfood Industry.com just reported the latest research has
shown that drying pet food at a high temperature destroys
nutrients. Does that sound like old information to you?
(Hmmm, makes you wonder what other "studies" they waste
money on.)

OK, here's another one:
They also reported another study showing that "cats have a
ceiling for carbohydrate intake, which limits ingestion and
constrains them to deficits in protein and fat intake on high
carbohydrate foods."
Translation: If they eat too much food made from grains
instead of meat, they'll get full and consequently not get
enough protein. (They needed a study to figure that out?)
