John 2:9-10 The master of the feast called the bridegroom. He said to him, " ... you have kept the good wine until now."
WHEN THE LORD HELPS, HE DOES SO IN A QUALITY WAY!
We can understand the customary practice as the master of the feast relates to the bridegroom: "Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then that which is inferior" (2:10). It would be in the early stages of the celebration that the family would want to put its best foot forward, so to speak. Not only the best food, but also the best of the wine would be served. Then later, after some good wine had been consumed, then the lesser quality could be served, and no one would mind, or perhaps even notice.
"But you have kept the good wine until now." No doubt the master of the feast would have been happy with just about any vintage at that point. What with the ceremony well underway, the type of wine would have been immaterial--they just needed something! But the "something" that was supplied was not just any wine--this was the best the man had ever tasted! And it made an impression on him because he had never heard of this being done before!
Jesus' miracle of turning the water into wine, as we saw yesterday, was in a great AMOUNT, but today we see it was also in a great QUALITY. It was the top of the line!
That is the way it is with our Lord. When He takes care of our needs in His own time and in His own way, we readily confess that He does so in a way which is FAR BETTER than we could ever imagine! How grateful we are to the Lord for the quality of His care for us!
