The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
November 2015
From the Church Guy
November has a pretty good prayer.
"Teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom."  That's the 12th verse of Psalm 90, and it's always been a favorite of mine, especially in November.
Maybe it's because in November, the calendar year is winding down, but the church year (start-up time, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter) is just picking up.  Maybe it's because we change our clocks, and that gets me thinking about time.  I don't know.
But it seems like a pretty good prayer for this time of year...we're taking time this month to give thanks for our blessings, right?  It's a good season to think about how we spend our days, and to decide what is most important in our lives.
"Teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom."
Come to think of it, that's a pretty good prayer in any month.

November 1 is Special
On November 1, All Saints/All Souls' Day, we name our beloved dead at the altar during our liturgies.  It is always a tender time as we think of "all the company of heaven," including the ones we love who have gone before.
November 1 is also Pledge Sunday.  We offer thanks to God for all our blessings by symbolically placing our pledge cards on the altar. The pledge cards we fill out represent our financial commitment to the health of our church in the coming year, and are a symbolic way of placing our very selves on the altar.
And the teen youth group is going on a hike after church.  All in all, a big day, and a good one.  Don't miss it!
 We're Looking at Our Buildings
The Vestry has formed a Task Force on Strategic Building Management.  This group hopes to make plans and set priorities for taking care of our property.  We need to consider the kitchen (stove and cabinet upgrades), the Parish House (how it is used and how to maintain it), and the church foundation (there is some water damage).  And other issues may arise.
The team would like to hear from you, if you have ideas or feelings about these matters.  Here are the people on the Task Force:  Jeff Jacobs (chairperson), Sandy Zanker-Nichols, Alan Blythe, Glenn Williams, Dave Gridley, Mark Phelps, Sue Phelps, and Fr. Mark.  Feel free to talk to them or write something up.
The Task Force will present its findings, ideas, and priorities to the Vestry.  In the Episcopal Church, the Vestry has ultimate responsibility for seeing that our buildings are well cared for.
 Youth Group Takes a Hike
The youth group is going on a hike in Chenango Valley State Park on Sunday, November 1 after church.  Led by Father Mark and the Laines, we could also use some other adult drivers.  S'mores WILL be involved.  (And if the weather won't allow us to hike, we'll go to Father Mark and Paula's house.  S'mores will STILL be involved.)  The teens will get a flyer in the mail as a reminder.
 Sunday School News
If you are new to the church and have children in Nursery thru 6th grade we would love to meet you and have your children visit our classrooms.  Our Church school runs during the first half of the service - from 10-10:30.  We then join everyone upstairs for the Eucharist.
It's been decided!  We will have a Youth Group for 3rd-6th graders this year.  We will meet on the second Sunday of each month after the ten o'clock service.  Our first official gathering will be November 8th.  We'll pick a name, brainstorm on ideas for projects, and play some games.
It's also been decided that once a quarter we will offer an event for children in Pre-K - 2nd grade.  Our first one will be in December.  Watch newsletter for more information.
Thank you to all the children and parents who helped with making the lunches for the October Canteen.  We made 100 lunches!
This year's Christmas pageant will be held on Sunday, December 20, during the 10 o'clock service.  Parts will be assigned on November 1st & 8th with rehearsals starting on the 15th after church.

Christ Church Welcomes a New Rector
Christ Church in Binghamton will celebrate the installation of the Rev. Elizabeth Ewing as their new rector on Thursday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m.  We're all invited to celebrate with our neighboring parish!
 Diocesan Convention
Each year, St. Mark's sends delegates to the Convention of our Diocese.  The Convention is a time for making connections between the Episcopalians of Central New York and to do the necessary work of business to maintain the church as an institution.  All clergy are required to attend, and each parish sends two lay delegates.
Alan Blythe and Brian Kessler will represent you this year at the Liverpool meeting, and our three clergy, Mark, Judy, and Dorothy, will also be present.  Elizabeth Jacobs is serving as your delegate this year.
The two-day gathering will be held at the Holiday Inn of Liverpool (within sight of our diocesan offices) on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14.  It will be our last Convention with Bishop Skip Adams, since he will retire before the next one.
 Book Club Update
St. Mark's book group will discuss Paula Hawkins novel THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN.  A lonely commuter imagines the story of a couple she has only glimpsed through her train window.  When the woman mysteriously disappears, the surprise packed nattative hurtles to a stunning climax.  An absorbing read.
St. Mark's Table
Tuesday, November 16 will be the next gathering of St. Mark's Table.  Everyone is welcome.  We get together in the parish hall downstairs at 6 pm, and everyone brings a dish to share for the potluck and place settings for themselves.  After we enjoy our meal together, Father Mark leads some singing with his guitar, and we have a simple Eucharist around the table.  We're on our way rejoicing at 7:30.  Come and see!
Canteen Will Be On November 22
St. Mark's will serve a hot meal at the Trinity Canteen (across from Binghamton High School at our sister parish, Trinity Church) on Sunday, November 22.  It's the Sunday before people traditionally get together with family and friends for a Thanksgiving feast.  Sadly, not everyone has easy access to food.  Perhaps you could show your gratitude to God by serving at the Canteen.  It's a commitment of two hours on that Sunday morning (from 11 until 1), and involves bringing the food you will be assigned, helping set up for the meal, serving in a friendly way, then cleaning up. You won't regret it!
