Wednesday 1 November

Our speaker next week is Tony Worobiec FRPS who will be presenting his talk Photographing Landscape Whatever The Weather, which bearing in mind the weather we've been getting lately is quite apt.

The talk is more of an instructional presentation which seeks to encourage the audience to view all weather conditions as a positive.
Tony starts the presentation by suggesting that on any given day you cannot choose the weather, but you can choose your location to make best use of it. For example, an overcast sky introduces a certain pathos to the landscape, so choose somewhere that reflects this. Rain can similarly prove off-putting to some, but when photographed at night, it can appear stunningly interesting. The lecture is based on a book he had published several years ago.

You can see what makes Tony tick by visiting his website: www.tonyworobiec.com

Below are a few images from the talk:

PDI Competition - Round 2
The closing date for the next round of the PDI competition season is almost upon us - Wednesday 8 November is the closing date for Round 2, which is being judged by Grete Howard ARPS from Bristol. The prescribed topic for this round in Paper. Grete gave us a fascinating talk on Wild Brazil back in June and makes this return trip to BPS to pass comment on our pictures.

Please send your entries to Ken by the date above. If you aren't too sure of the rules, you can find them in the Members' section of the BPS website. Don't forget the comments made by several past judges, if your image is dark, then it pays to put a fine key-line around the image to separate it from the black screen background - otherwise the judge has no idea where your image stops and the screen starts! For information on how to apply a keyline, have a look at Issue 522 of the newsletter (instructions for viewing back issues are at the foot of this newsletter).

PAGB Interclub Print Competition

Last Friday Steve Field and I braved the weather and Motorway network to drive to Blackburn for the PAGB Inter-Club Print Competition. The journey was as expected wet and long, taking 6 hours + to get there.

On Saturday, joining the other 30+ clubs from across the country, we settled to watch the scoring. The first 7 prints per club were judged with the scores being low and comments on harsh judging. At this point we were 5th with a score of 82 (the top 8 clubs go through to the final). After the break the scoring increased and was close to what was expected. Unfortunately our last 5 prints did not do as well as expected and we ended up with 139 points and in 12th place, with 9 clubs going to the final.

The next stage was the Plate competition for all clubs other than the finalists.  The plate requires 8 prints, and we swapped out a number of prints retaining the higher scoring ones and crossed our fingers. The judges changed the scores of some of our re-used prints (dropping 1 point overall) and did not like one of our new ones resulting in a total score of 94, not enough to win unfortunately.

Despite not qualifying for the final, and therefore next year's competition, it was an excellent competition with some outstanding images on show. We now have to qualify for Warwick and Blackburn next year by coming in the top 2 of the 2024 WCPF Inter Club Championships (as we did this year).

There was some good news from the weekend, It only took just over 3 hours to get back to Bristol so we could watch the Rugby, and I won 3 prizes in the raffle (unfortunately that did not include the printer!).
