Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 15 December

Next Wednesday, 15 December, should have been our AGM followed by the annual bash known as the BPS Social.

Following the latest edict by Boris and members' obvious concern about the Omicron variant, it has been decided that it would be sensible to cancel the social and instead to run the AGM over Zoom and that the second half of the evening will be a presentation by our own Sandie Cox. We would thank Sandie for standing in at such late notice, at present we don't know the title or subject of her talk, but Sandie is a well known and successful exhibitor in international salons, so I'm sure that we are in for a visual feast. Don't turn up at Unit 13, because you'll be on your own!

Here are the Zoom details:

Christmas & New Year

Next Wednesday will be the last meeting of 2021, we will meet again on 5 January 2022 when we will be having a visit from Don Bishop, ARPS who will be presenting his talk: Visions of the Landscape.

This is a tour around the UK where Don will give information on the images, how they were taken and some of the stories behind them. He will also try and explain his methods of landscape photography including the use of filters etc.

This will also be the closing date for Round 3 of the PDI Competition, when the Prescribed Topic will be Fragility. The judge will be Sandie Cox ARPS, DPAGB, AFIAP

In the meantime, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all and let us hope that no more restrictions are brought in to put the kibosh on the upcoming festivities.

See you all in 2022

BPS & Zoom
The road to providing satisfactory hybrid Zoom meetings has been one littered with more than its fair share of problems. However, following the transmission last week when we showed John Chamberlin’s print talk which, barring a few minor glitches on the picture front, seemed to have been a success, we were somewhat deflated this week when there appeared to be a real step backwards with the picture quality for many.
Let me explain a few things first:
  • The CCTV camera automatically determines the exposure of each picture, the trouble with this was that the size and colour of the mount affected what the camera saw and produced. For example, there was one landscape image that was in a letter box format and mounted on a black mount, with the border at the bottom occupying a large part of the 50cm x 40cm space. This fooled the camera, and in trying to produce something based on the black mount, finished up burning out the highlights in the sky.
  • This is also the problem when showing portrait orientated images as they are still the same height in the frame, but therefore have large light coloured areas either side (mount and wall), this also affected the exposure and as a consequence produced poor images.
  • One or two of the images also suffered a similar fate as they contained large areas of black or near-black within the picture.
  • These exposure problems did also affect the colour of the mounts with some cream mounts appearing a tad on the pink side and others greenish.
On the bright side (unintended pun), one thing that we did get right, though, was the colour, which for the most part was pretty true to the print. The only real exceptions being those affected by the exposure problems mentioned above.

So, what are we going to do about it? It would appear that the camera has been set on auto exposure for the last couple of meetings, which is something Steve Field picked up after this week’s meeting. Steve will be checking this next week when at the clubrooms to sort out the AGM, this should sort out the exposure problems.

During this last meeting, we did have a second monitor working alongside the PC which was set to pick up the Zoom transmission as sent out, and with the exception of some of the exposure problems, exhibited none of the problems that members mentioned during the meeting. This would seem to indicate that what was leaving us was OK, however something was happening between us and the receiving members. Could it be something to do with Service Providers, either ours or members.  We noted that there were a lot of issues raised with BT Broadband and Virgin on Wednesday with the graphs showing high outages/performance in Bristol.

I have today been in touch with the company that supplied the equipment we are using, and they say quite categorically, that the equipment we have is “high end kit” and that in their opinion it isn’t a problem caused at our end. From this conversation it became apparent that lack of bandwidth can cause problems, if your bandwidth is not sufficient (this can be affected by something as simple as neighbours’ usage), then Zoom will attempt to drop the picture resolution to maintain transmission – this could be the cause of some of the problems reported. Unfortunately, this is outside of our control, but, as we have done to date, we will always try to ensure that transmission from Unit 13 is as good as the equipment can produce. It might be worth noting that the speeds being provided to BPS on the night were pretty high, 360Mbps download and, more importantly, 40Mbps upload.

For those of you interested, I did put together an article for the WCPF detailing our route to holding hybrid meetings, a copy of which can be downloaded by following this link. Please read it, it might help you to understand some of the problems we have faced.

Trophy Cabinet

The more astute (or, is that awake) of you will have noticed that we have a new addition to the clubrooms. At long last we have a cabinet to show off the Society's silverware.

This is a long overdue addition to the clubrooms and now enables us to show off the collection of trophies amassed over the years which form a part of the history of BPS.

Many thanks to Jeff Hargreaves for organising the sourcing of the cabinet and also for the picture. Even greater thanks are due to Jeff for polishing the collection!

Trumpet Bowers' Corner
The following trumpet blast is from Sue O'Connell

7 acceptances including two awards in Frome recently (Silver and HC).

I have also finally made it to ABPE (Associateship of British Photographic Exhibitions) which represents 400 acceptances overall plus 20 new awards. According to the BPE website ABPE  "is designed to indicate consistent achievement of the highest standard over a substantial period of time".

Well it has taken a fair bit of time, it’s true, especially as it has become distinctly harder to gain those acceptances and awards in recent years, a reflection of the incredibly high standards of British club photography these days.
