RFS Launch Fire Alert iPhone App.
MEDIA RELEASE 10 May 2010

Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan has today announced that the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is launching the official RFS iPhone™ application designed to alert people to bush fire activity in NSW.

‘Fires near Me’ will be available to download free of charge from Apple’s Application store from today.

The Minister said that the RFS has been working closely with Apple™ to ensure that the Application is an efficient and useable tool that will benefit NSW communities.

“As well as giving residents the ability to monitor when and where Total Fire Bans are in place, Fires near Me also allows people to identify bush fire activity as it is happening,” said Mr Whan.

“This Application is another strategy implemented by the RFS to heighten community awareness and deliver effective communication.

“Fires near Me will complement the suite of tools available to the public including the recently upgraded RFS website and 1800 Information Line,” said Mr Whan.

RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said that the need for the public to have access to accurate and timely information on fires was one of the most important lessons learned from last year’s tragic Victorian bush fires.

By upgrading the RFS public communication channels more people can access accurate and up to date bush fire information instantly.

“With more and more people using mobile phone technology to access instant information, Fires near Me provides people with an opportunity to retrieve important updates.

“We’re urging people across the State to download Fires near Me and familiarise themselves with its capabilities before the start of the next bush fire season,” said Commissioner Fitzsimmons.

Meriton Development continued...
Closing Date for Submission on Meriton's Apartments Application Extended

Rob Stokes was successful in having the closing date for submissions on the Meriton Apartments application for 600 units in Warriewood--where Council had planned for 180 units --  extended until Tuesday 15th June at 5 pm.

This may not effect the Off Shore residents all that much until they get to the intersection of Samuel St and Mona Vale Rd in peak hour --the big roundabout.

All of Pittwater is gearing up to fight this overdevelopment and in trying to get the Dept of Planning, who will assess the application, to reduce the unplanned impact of so many in such a small space.

Rob is also trying to have the application assessed by an independent panel.

This may just be the beginning. Meritons own  land across the road from 14-18 Boondah Rd, on which  they have plans for  400 units where Council planned for 43 units. This is currently on the back burner.

Under new legislation (Part 3a),this type of over development could also happen in Newport and Mona Vale.

Marine Rescue Levy on Boat Rego & Licence Holders
SECURING MARINE RESCUE VOLUNTEERS’ FUTURE

The NSW Government is proposing an initiative to support Marine Rescue NSW, a voluntary, non-government organisation with more than 2300 members state-wide.

Minister for Ports and Waterways, Paul McLeay and Minister for Emergency Services, Steve Whan said Marine Rescue NSW provided a valuable service to the boating community and should be supported.

The proposal would see a $7.50 a year Marine Rescue levy on boating fees, so boaters can provide sustainable financial support to the volunteer service.
