Wednesday 8 November

We have a change to the scheduled programme next week following the late withdrawal of the planned speaker. We are grateful to Pete McCloskey FRPS APAGB for stepping into the breach at short notice. Pete will be showing a selection of prints from the BPS Permanent Collection. This collection is normally housed at the Bristol City Archives.

The collection includes photographs from as early as the mid-1800s right through to the present day. This is a talk Pete last gave at the beginning of 2017 and proved to be a fascinating insight into the history of the Society.

Fotospeed Discounts
At the end of last Wednesday's meeting, our speaker, Tony Worobiec, mentioned that if any of our members are ordering paper from Fotospeed they could get a 20% discount just by mentioning that they had attended his talk. All you need to do, is place your order over the phone and tell them that you were at the talk Tony Worobiec gave BPS on 1 November.

PDI Competition - Round 2
The closing date for Round 2 of the PDI competition season is next Wednesday 8 November. This round is being judged by Grete Howard ARPS from Bristol. The prescribed topic for this round is Paper. Grete gave us a fascinating talk on Wild Brazil back in June and makes this return trip to BPS to pass comment on our pictures.

Please send your entries to Ken by the date above. If you aren't too sure of the rules, you can find them in the Members' section of the BPS website.

Don't forget the comments made by several past judges, if your image is dark, then it pays to put a fine key-line around the image to separate it from the black screen background - otherwise the judge has no idea where your image stops and the screen starts! For information on how to apply a keyline, have a look at Issue 522 of the newsletter (instructions for viewing back issues are at the foot of this newsletter).

DI Group (Clubroom/Zoom) Meeting – Monday 13 November, 7.30 pm

Last DIG meeting in October was well attended in the clubroom as well as on zoom. Thanks to Paul MacLeod, who took charge of the zoom and handled the computers and the hardware, the hybrid meeting was a success. The interaction between members in the clubroom was more lively and relaxed. The November meeting will also be in the clubroom with access to it available on zoom for those who cannot come to the clubroom.

Last DIG meeting in October was an evening full of images of a variety of genres. The next meeting is on Monday 13 November, in about ten days’ time. The meeting is open to all BPS members and you are invited to share your images with fellow members in an informal atmosphere. It is also an opportunity to get a second opinion on your images from your fellow members or if you just like to sit and watch the proceedings you are welcome too.

For submission of the images I would still like to maintain the current system of sending images to me before the meeting. It allows me to prepare the presentation folder in advance for a smooth presentation. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 12 November. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Calling All Building Experts!
We have recently been experiencing a bit of damp getting into the building, mainly in the corner of the kitchen and also in the corner adjacent to the trophy cabinet at the front of the meeting room. It looks very much as if the joints in the high level brickwork on the party wall between Units 13 & 14 have opened up and are letting in water.

Before I involve the club in some hefty expenditure putting it right, I was just wondering if any of you out there has experience of this sort of thing, or if you are a surveyor or structural engineer who could give us the benefit of your experience.

Below is a picture (courtesy of John Hudson and his drone) that shows the problem:

If you think you can help, either email me at unit13@bristolphoto.org.uk or give me a call on 07706 868638.

Thanks
Pete Howell

Clifton LitFest
I have received the following from BPS member, Yealand Kalfayan:

Some of you may remember that I did a presentation at the Clifton LitFest last year. I had been fortunate enough to supply most of the photographs for a book about UK butterflies that was published in 2020 (A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies, ISBN 9781910723999).

Since that time I have been working on another book on butterflies with the author Jonathan Bradley. We have been invited to do another presentation at this year's Clifton LitFest on Saturday 11 November at 10:30. The venue is the Crypt below Christ Church, Clifton. This is a well-appointed meeting room with good audiovisual kit.

It would be great to have some support but if the subject matter does not appeal then I am sure there are other presentations going on during the LitFest that might be of interest. A wide variety of speakers has been invited this year.

Full details of the programme and the tickets are available through Eventbrite:

Hoping to see some of you there!

Best Wishes

Yealand
