Next Wednesday, 9 November, we have a talk by recently RPS distinguished BPS member, Andrew Marker FRPS, the talk is called The Path to RPS Distinctions and follows the route Andrew had to take in gaining his FRPS. Andrew felt that some newer members may be unfamiliar with the workings of the RPS, so the following (taken from the RPS website) gives some sort of insight into the distinctions process: The RPS (Royal Photographic Society) offers three levels of Distinctions which set recognised standards of achievement throughout the world. • LRPS (Licentiateship of The RPS) - images of a high standard of photographic execution - demanding but achievable for most dedicated photographers. Applicants must show variety in approach and techniques but not necessarily in subject matter. • ARPS (Associateship) - images of exceptional standard and a written Statement of Intent (what you hoped to achieve). This is a significant step up from the LRPS. At this stage, creative ability and personal style (what makes your work unique to you), along with complete control of the technical aspects of photography must be evident. It is at this level that you can first choose to submit your work to a particular specialist category. It is possible to apply for an ARPS without having first achieved an LRPS, but we do not recommend this unless you have considerable experience in photography. • FRPS (Fellowship) - our highest level of Distinction. Fellowship submissions are open to Associates of the Society and Fellows of the BIPP. Images must be of an outstanding photographic and creative standard and accompanied by a Statement of Intent. An obvious personal style is expected at this stage. You need to have achieved the ARPS before you can apply for the FRPS.
For print submissions, the focus is on creating a cohesive panel of images. For the LRPS you require a panel of 10 images, ARPS 15 images and Fellowship 20 images. Starting with his ARPS panel, he will show the various ideas he considered for a fellowship panel, ending the first half with his successful panel of white minimalist images from Santorini. The second half will be a selection of digital images and AV’s, these will include images from his trips to Yellowstone with John Chamberlin in Autumn 2015 and from Tuscany in Spring this year.

Kingswood Photographic Society invite BPS members to see their speaker, Iain McCowan FRPS, who will be giving his talk, Straight From The Garden Shed. Iain says: “My talk consists of prints only (no projection) and features both colour and mono images with a heavy bias towards sets, themes and methods of presentation. Large collages (A1 or bigger) are often used but equally very small images or sets of images are also presented (don't forget your opera glasses - ed). This aspect of print presentation I feel is very important, a variation on the commonly used 50 x 40 style. As for interest, there will be images covering landscape, intimate landscape, textures, dereliction, street art, abstract and history amongst others." Examples of Iain’s photography, can be found on the Focus Group website, and selecting ‘MEMBER GALLERIES’. The cost for this evening is £3.00. Kingswood PS meet from 7.30pm to around 9.30pm at St Barnabas Church Hall, Warmley, Bristol BS30 5JJ. |

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers
of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't
include them all. So please only advise of awards or other
milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
