John 5:36 But I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish-- the very works that I do-- bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me."
WITNESS: CHRIST'S WORKS
The second witness to whom Jesus pointed the Jews was the works He did. Here we see a concise explanation as to why Jesus performed so many miracles. The miracles in and of themselves were not the reason to believe in Jesus, but they were signs or evidences that He was the Savior. The works Jesus did showcased His power as God but they also confirmed how He fulfilled the requirements of the coming Messiah.
But Christ’s works were much more than the healings and the supernatural interventions. As He spoke to the Jews, He reminded them that He still had things to finish. Jesus had to continue upholding God’s righteous law for all people. This task would not be completed until He breathed His last on the cross. His atonement on Good Friday was the greatest work He would do.
It's as if Jesus were saying, "Pay attention from here on. You've seen a lot now, but you will see more." The same is true for us. All of Jesus' works are wonderful examples that He is our Lord and Savior. But the most important work is what He accomplished in our place on Calvary. That work of redemption was the greatest witness of Jesus, because it was the very work that destroyed sin's grip on our lives. May we stay focused on all of Jesus' works, but especially on the gospel of forgiveness!
