DUM DUM GIRLS
Get Lost In Your Bedroom Eyes

Dee Dee wrote "Bedroom Eyes" after returning from a European tour, jet-lagged and lonely. "I was home alone," she says. "Insomnia was taking its toll; I felt absolutely crazy. I looked up poetry on the subject and found a Dante Gabriel Rosetti poem and the song was born from that. I'd finally convinced my dad to give me one of his prescription sleeping pills and it kicked in while I was writing the song and I started hallucinating."

Dum Dum Girls release their second album, Only In Dreams for 26th September on Sub Pop Records. The band will also be embarking on touring throughout the US and Europe in October and November culminating with a headline show at London’s ULU on 17th November.

Write about what you know. That's what they say. But that's a lot easier said than done when what you know is very, very difficult to bear. That was the challenge Dum Dum Girls' leader Dee Dee faced when writing the songs for the band's moving second album Only in Dreams. "The first record was basically the first songs I'd ever written," says Dee Dee, "and I was thinking nostalgically about being a teenager.  This record, it was pretty much impossible not to write about very recent, very real things."

Very real things indeed: Dee Dee wrote "Hold Your Hand" immediately after her mother (the pretty lady on the cover of both the Dum Dum Girls' self-titled 2009 debut EP and their 2010 debut album I Will Be) was diagnosed with what turned out to be a fatal illness, and it's one of several songs on Only in Dreams that unsparingly trace her mum's passing. Other songs spell out the emotional toll of separation from one's lover, something Dee Dee had to deal with while she and her husband (Brandon Welchez of the acclaimed noise-pop band Crocodiles) pursued their own tour schedules. "Just about all the songs reflect the fact that I'd been on the road for about a year, pretty much separate from everything real in my life except the band," says Dee Dee. "A lot of it is about distance and detachment."

On several levels, Only in Dreams is a great leap forward for a gifted songwriter and an equally gifted band—it's heavy, deeply personal stuff and surely unprecedented for this style of music, and that's what gives the album both its uniqueness and its gut-punch emotional impact.

Only in Dreams retains Dum Dum Girls' signature blend of the girl-gang eyeliner punk of the Shangri-Las, the trashy propulsion of the Cramps, and the moody atmospherics of Mazzy Star, but for the first time, all four Dum Dum Girls play and sing on the album. Now the harmonies have more depth,Jules plays her own distinctive guitar leads, whilst Bambi’s (bass) and Sandy’s (drums) rhythm section powers the music like a vintage V-8 engine. Best of all, tons of time on the road— including two massively successful headlining tours—have molded Dum Dum Girls into a very formidable rock & roll band, giving the music an undeniable force.

And now that power and glory is showcased by a full-on studio production—while I Will Be was recorded at home and modestly spiffed up in a studio by legendary pop maestro Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Go's), Only in Dreams was recorded at Josh Homme's Pink Duck Studios - "almost a museum in terms of the old amps and guitars he's amassed," says Dee Dee admiringly.  Gottehrer again produced, this time with Sune Rose Wagnerfrom the Raveonettes.

Only in Dreams more than fulfills the promise of 2011's He Gets Me High EP, with impassioned, front-and-centre vocals from Dee Dee that sometimes recall one of her heroines, Chrissie Hynde; big singalong choruses draped with almost choral harmonies; a chugging wash of guitars drenched in reverb, tremelo and fuzz; and mighty, booming bass and drums. "I've always wanted to be in a loud rock & roll band and still maintain some feminine sound," Dee Dee says. "So even though this album is much poppier and a lot more polished, it's still tough." "Heartbeat" hooks with its Buddy Holly-esque guitar line, while "In My Head" uncorks one of the album's greatest choruses, and brace yourself for the incredibly poignant closer "Hold Your Hand."

Listen to the slowdive ballad "Coming Down," which Dee Dee wrote not long after her mum passed away. "That song came out of being in and out of

awareness of the depth of the situation," she says. "Sometimes when I write, I don't really analyze what I'm saying but the more I hear that song, the deeper it feels. I don't know if I'm addressing life or God or what, but it's our big, epic song on every scale."

If records can be classified into 'urban' (not in the R & B sense) and 'rural', then At Echo Lake is surely from the countryside,” Drowned in Sound

“Woods make a brand of new folk that’s blissfully whimsical, happily nostalgic and, most importantly, classically and simply melodic..” Loud & Quiet

“An album that exposes itself to the forces of the great outdoors” Uncut

Woods is a two-headed dog asleep on the porch and a butterfly on the windowsill... a Janus, a Gemini and a screen door. The sun won’t fade and the earworms will not leave, but the jams go on too long for the girl in the back who wonders if her friends are at another bar. Still, the ballads always make her cry. Woods is up there relaying the Woods-feel: Folk-rock, fuzz, tambourines, tapes and raw lunch pulled straight from the yard. Pop songs and other things: Sun and Shade.”—Glenn Donaldson

Over the past few years Woods have established themselves as an anomaly in a world of freaks. They were an odd proposition even in the outré company of vocalist/guitarist/label owner Jeremy Earl’s Woodsist roster, perpetually out of time, committed to songsmanship in an age of noise, drone and improvisation, to extended soloing, oblique instrumentals and the usurping use of tapes and F/X in an age of dead-end singer-songwriters.

Recent live shows have seen them best confuse the two - playing beautifully-constructed songs torn apart by fuzztone jams and odd electronics. Deformed by contemporary experiments, bolstered by magical traditions from the past, WOODS the sound of now, right here.

“Teeth shattering, wind tunnel garage-punk mixes with heroically diseased feedback….” Mojo

Blown out, obnoxious, masked noise punk from Bisbee, Arizona, FRANCIS HAROLD AND THE HOLOGRAMS (Francis Harold, Hologram I, Hologram II, Hologram III) released their debut full-length, Who Said These Were Happy Times, last year (via Agitated Records) – it’s evil, noisy and reminiscent of death. No really! Think Flipper, Samhain and Fang, and God’s Balls era TAD, Pissed Jeans and Clockcleaner

They’re like rubbing salt into the wounds of your freshly hewn off ears…amazing, abrasive, and raw!

Beirut leader Zach Condon’s music is often synonymous with the exotic mysteries of world travel. Since Beirut’s last album, 2007’s The Flying Club Cup, sang a love letter to France (with a 2009 stop-off in Mexico for the March of the Zapotec EP) many have asked where his songs would voyage next. Lots of guesses, but few predicted the inward journey Condon has achieved on The Rip Tide, an album with the most introspective and memorable songs of his young career.

Recorded in Upstate New York, Brooklyn and, of course, Condon’s hometowns of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, The Rip Tide marks a distinct leaping off point for Beirut. Musically, songs have a harmonic immediacy that contrasts the complexities of Zapotec’s Mexican full orchestra compositions. These songs started as small melodies, conceived on piano or ukulele, then built upon by the entire band’s contributions in the studio, before undergoing a paring down and retrofitting by Condon. What results is a record that sounds like it could have been recorded in one session, with exciting rhythms matching the upbeat horns and contrasting the mournful strings. In terms of style, no direct geographical affiliation to be exhumed. Rather, what emerges is a style that belongs uniquely and distinctly to Beirut, one that has actually been there all along.

Lyrically, Condon exposes a depth of honesty that outstrips the simplified nomadic troubadour image of his past. The songs speak of love, friendship, isolation and community, touching on universal human themes that are less fabricated stories than impressions of life at a quarter century of age. Songs are no longer about imagining places you haven’t been; they’re about places of which we are all extremely familiar, some of them too familiar.

This dramatic shift expands Beirut’s palate without weighing the music down. Condon has coated serious lyrics with his greatest tunes ever. The second track, “Santa Fe,” is the best pop song he has yet written, a jumpy ode to the town of his youth, and an early sign that The Rip Tide is all about the staycation. Of particular note is “Goshen,” a torch song that wraps itself in Condon’s delicate piano phrases at a level of intimacy never heard before on a Beirut song.

The album is on Pompeii Records (via Forte Distribution in the UK), a label started and wholly owned by Condon.  Pompeii is a fully independent, artist run, label and it is releasing The Rip Tide internationally. This extreme level of creative control is what the band has always preferred. Shows often sell-out because they choose to play smaller, more intimate venues. This connection directly to fans extends to The Rip Tide release itself, the desire to be able to 100% decide what their music will sound, look, and feel like, not to mention how it can be obtained.

Griffin Rodriguez’s production is, once again, immaculate. The performances of the band – Perrin Cloutier on accordion, Paul Collins on bass, Ben Lanz on trombone, Nick Petree on drums, and Kelly Pratt on horns – are spot-on. With contributions by such esteemed colleagues as violinist Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Sharon Van Etten, The Rip Tide reveals greater levels the more you explore. And you don’t even have to travel very far.
