• Radiologists — watchdogs of elder abuse
    Physical abuse of elderly individuals can be difficult to identify and even more difficult to prove. When elderly patients with injuries serious enough to require hospital emergency department or physician treatment, it is important for physicians to scrutinize the injuries to determine if they may be the result of mistreatment. Radiologists can play an important role in abuse detection.

    If a radiology department or radiology practice implements a lung cancer screening program as a high-quality preventive health service for a community, will patients come? Not necessarily. Achieving visibility and support — even by local physicians — may be challenging, attendees at a scientific session of the 2017 annual meeting of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons were told.

    Children have been swallowing disc-shaped button batteries for decades, but injuries from these have been on the increase in the United States. Radiography is the modality used for initial diagnosis but recent guidelines now recommend advanced imaging for some cases. Physicians at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center conducted a retrospective study to catalogue imaging features of button battery ingestion and to assess the impact the NASPGHAN guidelines might have.

  • Treatment protocols for adverse reactions to contrast agents: What radiologists need to know
    The percentage of patients who have adverse reactions to contrast agents used for imaging exams is very low, but radiologists need to be knowledgable of and proficient in administering treatment protocols. An article published in the Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal summarizing types of adverse reactions and appropriate treatment to counteract them provides a concise, up-to-date review.

  • An overview of gadolinium deposition disease
    Gadolinium-based contrast agents, however controversial, have been repeatedly shown to have an excellent safety record during the decades they have been used. However, concern is increasing about the retention of gadolinium in the body. A wide spectrum of adverse effects that can occur have been reported, including may occur, potentially causing toxicities and gadolinium deposition disease (GDD).
