Ade Edmonson & The Bad Shepherds for Oct/ Nov

"...a beguiling voice—a little bit Regina Spektor, a little bit Joanna Newsom—and a captivating presence" NYLON

"Like a prairie-bred, meat-and-potatoes Joanna Newsom, Crain’s vocals are quivering, emotive and visceral." PASTE

Samantha Crain’s second album, You (Understood) is perfectly summed up with a quote from diarist and author Anais Nin,  “Each contact with a human being is so rare, so precious, one should preserve it.”
Each song on this album revolves around a real person, and recounts a particular episode of Crain’s life with that person. The scenes and the people are not especially unusual or stirring but the idea that specific contact will never, in all of time, happen again was a catalyst to inspire. Crain takes a microscope to the simplest of human interactions and feelings, turning them over, looking at them from all angles, measuring them on all sides whilst taking them apart with the full realization that each experience however small, are really quite exceptional.

For an album that engages in so much dissection, Crain enlisted Joey Lemon, producer of her Confiscation EP(2008) and guru of the Midwestern avant-garde band, Berry, to help her glue it all back together. They, along withEric Nauni (Student Film) and Ben Wigler (Arizona, New Beard), recorded the eleven songs in 7 days at Lemon’s studio in a white pole barn on the north side of Wichita, KS.
Feeling the importance of giving each of these songs a sound as personal and individual as the experiences and the people themselves, Crain expanded her repertoire from her debut Songs In the Night (2009) - the guitars are fuzzier; the time signatures modified; the drums audacious; the spaces bigger; the highs, higher; and the lows, lower. Carine has entwined herself the decibels and the dynamics of personal contact and has preserved her contact with 16 people that affected her throughout the writing and recording of these songs.
You (Understood) is her testimony to those sporadic and revered chapters.
