Digital Imaging Group
DI Group (Clubroom/Zoom) Meeting – Monday 11 December, 7.30 pm

Six members presented a wide range of work at the November DIG meeting to a substantial audience in the clubroom as well as on zoom.

Steve Bridgen took us on a nostalgic journey of steam trains with a clever use of tryptic to construct wide angle view of railway lines. His other images comprised portraits and infrared landscapes.

Anita Fullerton presented a synopsis of her work during the past year covering landscape, architecture and flowers photography which she does so well. The presentation was well designed to be self-explanatory with text and a combination of single and multiple images.

Sue Swift saw the opportunity to photograph a crashed car (not hers, I hasten to add) and went on to construct a creative composition to tell a story of how it may have happened.

Rachel Domleo, recently returned from a holiday, never misses any opportunity to collect images of all types. Her presentation was a lesson on observation, spotting shapes, colours, textures, light and shade besides travel images. It was great to see how she uses her creative skills to combine them as matching panels of triptychs or even fifteen images. An example of her keen observation, reproduced here, shows how she spots a small shape, skull in this case, in a wall which most of us would just glance over and then make a mental note of finding something similar to make a panel. Digital cameras give us this advantage over the old film cameras of capturing a large number of images at little or no cost.

Tim Barker showed his photographs of the re-enactment of the war time Lancaster bomber and crew in a dramatic setting in low light and misty environment.

Robin Mudge addressed something completely different, a one-page-zine to show your favourite photos in a printed form as a small booklet of eight images printed on A3 paper and folded down to A6 size which you can carry in your pocket. It has a completely different feel to showing them on your phone screen.

The next meeting is on Monday 11 December. It is open to all BPS members and invited to share their images with fellow members in an informal atmosphere. It is also an opportunity to get a second opinion and comments on your images from your fellow members if you wish. You are also welcome to just sit and watch the proceedings if you like.

For the submission of the images I would still like to maintain the current system of sending them to me before the meeting. It allows me to prepare the presentation folder in advance for a smooth presentation. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 10 December. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Bristol Salon 2024
The 2024 Bristol Salon is open for entries to all members. For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since 1947 and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from across the world.

Entrants may submit up to 12 projected images and 12 prints across the three sections (Open, Monochrome & Nature) in each category. These are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free. Please note: photography course and distance members will have to pay the full fee.

This is your chance to dip your toes in the murky world of international exhibitions - and it is FREE! Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email Ralph at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

The closing date is 28 January.

Full details can be found on the Salon website https://bristolsalon.co.uk

Black on White Camera Repairs
Just a heads up that Black on White camera repair shop (Redland) owners are retiring next year and from January will just be working to clear the backlog on their shelves, and therefore taking in no new work.

Competition to Enter - FREE!

There is a competition being run by the London Camera Exchange (LCE) and is open to all abilities – and this bit will appeal to some of our more “careful” members, it's FREE to enter! The prize fund includes a share of £12,000 of vouchers to spend in store, so this could be a fantastic opportunity for photography lovers to invest in that new piece of kit they've had their eye on.

The competition features 14 categories, from abstract to wildlife, plus a "peoples' choice" section which will be voted for by the public, so there's sure to be a category to suit all members' areas of interest.

It is sponsored by brands including Canon, Nikon and OM System alongside partners including Fujifilm, Panasonic and Sony. Judges, including founder of SheClicks, Angela Nicholson, Chris George from the UK's largest photographic publisher, Future Publishing, and street photographer, Peter Dench, bring a wealth of experience to the judging panel.

The competition closes at midnight on 24 January 2024 so there is still plenty of time to get those entries in.

More information, including a full list of categories, terms and conditions and details of how to enter can be found at https://poty.lcegroup.co.uk.

Bristol Amateur Football - A Plea
I have received the following plea for help with grassroots football in Bristol:

Hi my name is Andrew Jackson, I was wondering if some of your members could give grassroots football clubs in Bristol much needed publicity.

I established Tiger Sports Photography to promote grassroots football, but through my involvement in the sport I have stumbled on some serious issues in local Bristol football which could threaten the existence of the clubs and leagues

Most clubs are run by a small number of volunteers who struggle financially to manage the clubs. The costs are increasing every season, for example match officials cost between £40-£60 a game, and the average cost of hiring a pitch £50-£100. If these costs continue to rise, which is sure to happen, many clubs will cease to exist. Some clubs having been established for well over a hundred years.

If you find there are a number of your members who are interested in this campaign to support local Bristol football clubs then I will make the process as simple as possible and the photographers don’t have to be at the whole of the game even just 20-30 minutes will be sufficient to provide enough photos to promote the clubs. I am confident that with other photographers’ help we can reach an audience of many thousands of people, which should give the clubs much needed exposure to raise funding through sponsorship packages.

Many Thanks
Andrew Jackson

If you think you can help, contact Andrew direct at greensquare1@googlemail.com. The added bonus could be that, along with helping these clubs, you could create your own portfolio of sports photos. It's worth noting that Andrew has confirmed that you would retain copyright of any any images taken.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
