Hello Firstname

Wednesday 16 October

Wednesday 16 October sees Round 1 of the 2019-20 print competition season, when the judge will be Peter Weaver APAGB CPAGB LRPS.

Peter is well known to many members and has judged many times at BPS. He has a very easy going and benevolent approach to judging, so those who are entering for the first time needn't worry about harsh criticism of their pictures as they are more likely to receive words of encouragement rather than criticism.

A Bit Of History
I have recently come across the library of old BPS newsletters, which started way back in May 1947. Below is an excerpt from the very first issue which may answer one of the questions that crops each year at Annual Print Competition time - namely who is this person R J Fry that one of the major cups is named after? Apart from being a member of the Fry's Chocolate family, he was also a major benefactor of the Society.
CLUB CAMEOS No.1
OUR PRESIDENT:  Mrs. R.J. Fry
This is the first of a new series in which we hope to give pen pictures of personalities of our Society, chiefly for the benefit of the newer members, quite naturally, of course, we start with our President, who elsewhere has kindly sent us a message.
It is very difficult to think of Mrs. Fry without remembering our late President Mr R.J.Fry They have both done so much for the Society financially and by their activities that jointly they have been our strongest supporters. Our Club Rooms at Park Street (unfortunately blitzed} were provided and handsomely appointed by them and even at his passing Mr. Fry generously thought of us for he was intensely interested in all our activities. This is also obvious from the most popular and probably unique of club competitions the "R.J. Fry" with its very fine challenge Bowl and many cash prizes, in which also Mrs. Fry makes her personal selection and award.

Mr. Fry was a very fine pictorial worker, of the straight school and was also an F.R.P.S. He always took a lively part in all the discussions.

What more natural then than, on his death, Mrs. Fry was asked to become our President. and to this she kindly consented to agree. Although not an active photographer, she follows all our activities with a keen interest. her health is not of the best and she is forbidden to climb stairs so that we rarely see her now, but we hope that at some future time, when circumstances permit, we shall see her at some of our meetings. In the meantime, let us send her our best wishes and thanks.

Thanks to Nick Ball for this picture of R J fry

WEX/Calumet Workshop At Unit 13
How to use three point-lighting | Flash photography
Tuesday 15 October, 10:00am - 1:00pm. at BPS, Unit 13 - Cost £15
Learn the basics of studio lighting for photographers getting started or wanting to refresh how to use one to three-point lighting setups with Hannah Rooke.
Itinerary:
  • Basic camera settings
  • One-point light setups
  • Three-point light setups
  • Differences between hard and soft light
  • Controlling and manipulating lights with modifiers
  • Differences between flash and constant
Lighting can be daunting to most photographers at any level. A relatively simple approach and setup can create a natural look. Learning to shape and modify light can change the mood of an image and open up new possibilities of creativity, even with minimal understanding of the systems.
We will also look at flash lighting setups and the application and benefits of this.
This workshop is for those who have a basic understanding of manual controls of a camera and would like to add the use of lighting to their photographic arsenal.
You will need:
  • Your DSLR/mirrorless camera and lens
  • Spare battery
  • Memory card
To book tickets, click here.

Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm
Wild Arena | Macro Moth photography - £30

These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography. During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close-up. Topics covered will include:
  • The choice & use of macro lenses
  • Keeping things in focus
  • The creative use of depth-of-field
  • Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to photographers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.
For further details and booking, please follow this link.

Thursday 17 October 10am until 4pm: WEX are holding an open day at their Bristol branch (opposite Unit 13). Full details here.

Lacock Abbey Until 3 November Photography exhibition at the Fox Talbot Museum by Maggie Taylor
Artist Maggie Taylor returns to Lacock this summer with Through the Looking Glass. Using her point and click camera, flatbed scanners and Photoshop, she creates digital art that transports viewers into dreamlike worlds. Inspired in part by Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland, Taylor’s use of antique nineteenth-century photographic sources including anonymous daguerreotypes and tintypes imbues her imagery with a Victorian character appropriate to the setting of Carroll’s narrative. Discover links to Lacock Abbey through these images, on display in our Photographic gallery - free admission to the exhibition. For more details of the exhibition and Lacock, follow this link. (I've seen this exhibition and she almost manages to "out-Barry" Barry! - Ed)

Competitions to Enter
Architectural Photographer of the Year - Organised by The Museum of Bath Architecture and Bath Preservation Trust, this year’s competition will have three categories with two new themed categories:
Architecture of Entertainment
From ancient amphitheatres to then multiplex cinema architects have been designing entertainment spaces for thousands of years. This year we are setting a challenge for photographers to capture images of architecture, interior or exterior, that have an entertainment theme, be it the Sydney Opera House or the Theatre Royal.
Bath: After the Georgians
Most people who come to visit Bath are here to see the Georgian city. However, as the city has expanded and developed over the years, so too has its architecture. Even within the centre you can find the odd 1960’s brutalist building and as you travel further out of the centre great examples of Victorian and Edwardian styles can be found. What can you find? What buildings old or new catch your eye?
Junior architectural photographer of the year
Open to photographers under the age of 19. We want to see what architecture inspires you. What do you prefer old buildings or ultra-modern? What’s the coolest building you’ve seen?
