Genesis 11:8-9 (NKJV) So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
The Tower of Babel: Restoration of Language
Though people have not stopped sinning since Babel — and we see the results — the Lord has not stopped working. The Father showed love for the whole world by sending His Son. Jesus sacrificed Himself for our sins to make us at one with God. The Father and the Son further send forth the Holy Spirit to restore the the only language that saves. It is the language of the grace, mercy, and glory of the Lord.

Pentecost was another instance where people suddenly started speaking different languages. But it was no punishment. It was a great gift of the Holy Spirit. Though the apostles spoke many different languages that day, there was one message. The gospel of Christ crucified is the language of the Holy Spirit, and everyone needs to hear and learn it. The Holy Spirit also gives us continuing education because, as anyone who has learned a second language knows, if you don’t use it, you lose it.

Everyone has tried at times to build towers of their own pride. All have fallen short of the glory of God. But Jesus took the rightful punishment that our sins deserved. And so we have no need to built a tower to the heavens. The Holy Spirit has taught us Jesus is in heaven building many rooms for us. That’s the language for all people which needs to fill the whole earth.
