While sapphires are the traditional birthstone for September, there are countless other affordable gemstones that can be used to craft stunning beaded jewellery – like:

CORNISH BEAD FAIR REPORT
Wadebridge is never as crowded as our spring Cornish Fair at Probus, but we were still busy – and with two big sales, actually took more than Probus.
We love it in Cornwall. However, it did take 10-hours to get there from Norwich! After the show we spent three-days at Carbis Bay, near St Ives – then near Falmouth and a night in Fowey, before heading North to the New Forest.
GLASS BEADS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!
Glass beads are very popular for necklaces, bracelets, earrings, anklets and piercing. You can also use them on lamps, head caps and tiaras, even threaded on curtains. Don’t look down on glass!
Glass are a cheaper alternative to crystal and more available. Therefore there are more shapes and colours in glass – and like gemstones, they come faceted, matte, or high-gloss too. Shapes range from simple designs like spheres, teardrops and leaves, to original and obscure forms.
However, versatility is the key to getting the most from your string – so buy round beads to avoid leftovers.
Glass beads are available in every colour, especially primary red, green, and clear – to more sparkling colours of aqua, magenta and rose. Many are multi-coloured with a blow effect as can occur on glass vases and beakers.
Mix glass with other beads when designing jewellery. A formal necklace may incorporate a few crystal beads threaded with the glass beads to give an impression of expense and class. However, a more casual look may prefer to incorporate shells or seed beads instead.
Most glass beads are made out of matte glass, dichroic glass and lamp worked glass. These regular forms of glass beads are relatively cheap to purchase. Glass beads can also be found in rare forms of vintage glass from Germany, Japan, Italy and Czechoslovakia. These beads are usually hand made and more expansive – for collectors requiring a rare jewellery. Glass beads, as with many other beads are usually purchased ready holed and are strung on cotton or nylon thread.
What are glass pearls
These are man-made and coated to give a fantastic glossy eye-catching sheen. Like genuine pearls they have a substantial feel and weight, and are cool to the touch.
Advantage of glass pearls
They cost a lot less than real pearls or gemstones, look almost the same, and lack the grooving found in cheaper natural pearls. They are more varied, in different shapes and bright colours like yellow, red, green and blue – as well as sparkling shades like aqua, magenta and rose.

Mix glass with other beads
When making jewellery, blend glass with gemstones depending on the design. A formal necklace may use a few crystal beads threaded with glass beads to give an impression of style and expense. However, a more casual look might incorporate shells instead.

FRAME BEADS
Frame beads are a great way to sex-up your jewellery. So called because they resemble a spectacle frame. Frame beads can be used to centerpiece a necklace, as an earring, or several small frames can be added together.
Some frames look like baby bangles, but all are drilled ready to thread, and most are very large, ideal for a modern design.

It’s only a week to Beads Up North at Haydock Racecourse. We have many exhibitors trading beads, jewellery, lace & other crafts – in two halls, along with beading jewellery-making workshops & refreshments. A bumper show, not to be missed!
