1 Corinthians 12:3 No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
GIVING CREDIT
A local newspaper carried a story about a high school athlete who has won two state titles in track each of the past four years. It's an accomplishment only a few others have achieved. But I'm sure she would be the first to acknowledge that the credit for her success doesn't belong to her alone. Her parents, coaches, teachers, and others all played vital roles behind the scenes.
Faith in the Lord, however, is far more precious than all the trophies, awards, and earthly recognition one could ever receive. It is by faith that we receive forgiveness, peace with God, and everlasting life in heaven. At Christ's return the only thing that will matter is faith, for Jesus says, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned" (Mark 16:16).
But who deserves the credit for our faith? The credit goes to the One behind the scenes who worked that faith in their hearts. "No one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:3). On Pentecost the Lord poured out the Holy Spirit upon the apostles to equip them for the work of being His witnesses to the world. The Spirit is still working behind the scenes through Word and Sacrament to work, preserve, and strengthen faith among the members of the Holy Christian Church.
As you go about your day going to the Lord for forgiveness, seeking His guidance, and thanking Him for His blessings, remember to give credit for faith where it is due, to the Holy Spirit, the Helper and Comforter sent to dwell with us and in us always.
