 PET FOOD NEWS & INFO

Some Pet Food Insights

A new study – a suspicious and
VERY confusing study – claims
that raw pet food is a risk to carry
antibiotic-resistant E. coli.
This new "study" contains many
inconsistencies I believe to be an
obvious attempt to scare pet owners
from feeding raw food to their pets.

This questionable study was performed
with dogs, not cats. But beware of all
studies that attempt to discredit natural
feeding and healing methods for your pets.

Holly cat
This is Holly, my oldest cat, who lived to be 27. As with many rescued cats, I did not have the documentation to prove her age. Therefore, she missed her chance at celebrity!

1. FDA To Meet With Pet Owners

If you ever have wanted to confront the FDA about pet food issues,
here's your best chance.

From Susan Thixton,
truthaboutpetfood.com:

"Pet owners are the largest stakeholder in pet food. While FDA has held meetings with other stakeholders in pet food for years (decades), the agency has denied us...the same opportunity. Until now.

"Yesterday (8/25/22) the FDA notified us that they are willing to provide us with a 'Stakeholder meeting' this fall. The tentative date they suggested and we agreed to is September 23. Our plan is for this meeting to begin a regular meeting schedule (quarterly) with FDA.

"This meeting (and future meetings) will be to bring to FDA’s attention pet food issues that pet owners struggle with – directly from pet owners. Thus, at each meeting 2 or 3 pet owners, an independent pet store owner, and perhaps a veterinarian will participate."

The meetings will be virtual, so if you have a good internet connection and know how to use it, here's how you might be able to participate:

2. What Really Happened to Dr. Jones?

Those who weren't paying attention made hateful comments, such as:

'DON'T listen to him, he LOST his vet license...
Fired because of FALSE claims...
Kicked out because of MISINFORMATION...
Forced to leave...'

But this is what really happened..

I still attend Dr.Jones' highly informative webinars and buy natural, effective products as needed.

3. The Oldest Cats in the World

"Scooter" was the oldest living cat until his time ran out shortly after his 30th birthday in March.

But an older cat named "Lucy" lived to the ripest old age of 39. She is the oldest cat on record but had already passed when Scooter claimed the title.

4. Another Janus cat?

Last month we shared a story about a Janus cat, born in Thailand. These cats have two faces, as a rule, with 2, 3, or 4 eyes. Sometimes both mouths are functional, though they have only one brain. Usually living only a few hours or days, survivors are considered quite rare, but with good care, a few have lived a normal lifespan.

Now another Janus cat has been born in Arkansas, USA, on Aug. 17. So far, he appears quite healthy and could defy the odds with a normal lifespan, too.

5. General Cat Care Questions

Thanks to our wonderful cat-loving friend and frequent contributor, Paul DeCeglie, for submitting these helplful tips:

How many hours a day can you leave your cat home alone?

In general, vets say it's okay to leave your cat alone for up to 24 hours at a time. As long as they have a clean litter box, access to fresh water, and a full meal before you go, they should be fine for a day. Any longer than that, though, is pushing it.

How do I know my cat is happy?

One good sign of a happy cat is kneading their paws into their bed, blanket, or your stomach. This behavior is often accompanied by purring, usually another signal of contentment.
Using the Litter Box. A happy cat will use their litter box and is usually more forgiving if its maintenance isn't quite up to snuff (or sniff).

Keeping Your Cat in Tip-Top Shape

You’re not the only one who needs to work out. Exercise is important to your cat’s overall health, too. Movement, especially the kind that uses their hunting skills, can keep their weight down and help them work off extra energy. Playtime is crucial for their mental well-being, too. It can help stop depression and boredom, which can lead to bigger health and behavior issues.

Aim to play with your cat for around 10 to 15 minutes at a time. If they don’t enjoy it, they’ll let you know. When they get bored, put the toys away and offer some praise and a few treats. Or introduce some new toys next time.

Beware of toys with string, etc. Cats are often pictured playing with a ball of yarn. This is NOT a good idea. Strings and yarn can be swallowed and may cause life-threatening damage internally. A toy with string can be used, but only under supervision. When done, put it away for another day.

6. Heartwarming Stories

Subway Rescue

A kitten now named Porg was rescued by a woman waiting for the subway in Chicago. He was found inside a cardboard box on the platform. He turned out to be a very special kitty who needs special care, which could be why he was heartlessly abandoned.

Firemen Revive Unconscious Cat Using Special Pet Oxygen Mask

This is somewhat interesting, but it's not an article. Just a few photos of pet-size oxygen masks...a worthy investment for any fire department to acquire these life-saving devices.
While there are no photos of cats being saved or modeling the masks (only dogs), you might want to see if your local fire department already has these or would be interested in obtaining some. It could be an opportunity for a local organization to hold a fund-raising event for the department.

Heartwarming Story of Rescue and Rehabilitation

A very lucky kitty named Sebastian found the perfect forever home when a loving couple fostered, then adopted him. They admit they were drawn to him because of his injured leg and wanted to help him recover. It took many months of dedicated therapy, but he's a very happy cat now!
