Native Plant Conservation Campaign News: New Ohio Law: The sale and distribution of 38 destructive, invasive plant species are now prohibited

Ohio has responded to documented environmental damage associated with the spread of invasive non-native plants by banning the sale of 38 destructive plant species. See list below.
Examples of the harm caused in Ohio by non-native invasive species include:
- Ohio State researchers have found bush honeysuckle plants can negatively impact the genetic fitness of Ohio’s state bird, the cardinal.
- The Japanese barberry shrub has been linked to increased tick population and incidence of Lyme disease.
- Invasive species can also lessen property values and increase the need for expensive, labor intensive battles to control them using chemicals and hand weeding.

NPCC is compiling a national list of laws requiring the use of native plants in landscaping, on roadsides and elsewhere. If your community or state has adopted a successful pro-native plant law, please let us know!
