SHEDDING NEW LIGHT ON THE BLACK DAHLIA SAGA AND POSING AN ASTONISHING AND CHILLING THEORY REGARDING THE KILLER
“Even the darkest scenario can result in transcendence.” – David J
The Chanteuse and the Devil’s Muse is a play with live music by Los Angeles-based artist David J (Bauhaus and Love and Rockets), collaborating with Ego Plum (Ebola Music Orchestra). It premieres at the Bootleg Theatre on Thursday, September 8, 2011.
“With this production we are revisiting the ‘Black Dahlia’ song cycle that was originally composed for the independent feature film, ‘The Devil’s Muse’ directed by Ramzi Abed,” explains David J, “In this new theatrical staging, I am reuniting with my original musical collaborator, Ego Plum. Here the music works as a framework around which another related story is interwoven.”
David J, who brought the story of Warhol muse, Edie Sedgwick, “Silver for Gold”, to the Los Angeles stage to critical acclaim, has turned his attentions on the saga of the Black Dahlia. A legendary cold case that has long been a spot of tarnish on the glitter of Hollywood’s tinsel, the story of the murder and mutilation of aspiring actress Elizabeth Short has been a mystery that has baffled experts.
In this theatrical staging, David J’s musical frame-work is melded together with the story of torch singer, Madi Comfort, a historical figure in the real case, whose paramour was one of the prime suspects in Short’s grisly murder. Will her police interrogation reveal a dark secret that will finally unlock the mystery of the “Black Dahlia”?
The production features live music by David J, Ego Plum and Ysanne Spevack (Smashing Pumpkins, English National Opera). The role of Madi Comfort will be played by Daniele Watts (two-time NAACP Award-winner and Ovation Award nominee), with Tracey Leigh (Obie Award-winner) making special appearances in the role throughout the run. The part of Lieutenant Frank Jemison will be played by Douglas Dickerman. The play also features the internationally acclaimed Butoh performer, Vangeline.
With the success of the Kickstarter campaign to fund his forthcoming album, “Not Long For This World”, David J went back to the online fundraising platform to raise the money needed to bring The Chanteuse and the Devil’s Muse to the stage. The campaign was a success. David J raised more than his $5,000 goal to bring this amazing theatrical work to the Bootleg Theatre for its September/October run.
