Some Pet Food Insights

A new study – a suspicious and
VERY confusing study – claims
that raw pet food is a risk to carry
antibiotic resistant E. coli.
This new "study" contains many
inconsistencies I believe to be an
obvious attempt to scare pet owners
from feeding raw to their pets.

This questionable study was performed
with dogs, not cats. But beware of all
studies that attempt to discredit natural
feeding and healing methods for your pets.

Law requires transparent labeling changes,
but we need consumer support!

1. How to Keep Cats Cool During the Summer

Heatwaves dominate the weather across the globe this summer and many
animals and humans suffer tragic consequences. Cats can experience dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke when temperatures exceed 80 degrees F (26 degrees C).

Here are 8 way to keep your cat cool this summer if you do not have air conditioning:

1. Swap the Water Bowl for a Fountain
2. Get a Cooling Mat
3. Swap Dry Food for Wet Food
4. Give Her a Haircut
5. Provide Airflow (but do not rely entirely on a fan)
6. Apply Cool Water to Her Paws
7. Give her a Cool Bath
8. Provide Outdoor Cats a Cool Spot

Signs your cat is too hot:
    Panting or open-mouth breathing
    Rapid respiratory rate
    Hot ears
    Bright red tongue
    Dark red or pale gums
    Drooling
    Depression or weakness
    Anxious behavior
    Vocalization
Lying on one side, completely stretched out

Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke or death. This is a vet emergency.

2. The age-old question remains: How intelligent are cats?

"Ninety percent of a cat’s brain has a similar structure to humans, and behaviorists estimate their intelligence to be similar to an 18-month to 2-year-old [human] toddler."
"Cats learn by trial and error. For them, they need to 'do' something to learn it – not just see it. In fact, they’re better at solving puzzles than dogs.

3. What is a Janus cat?

These very rare cats are born with two faces but one brain. They may have 2, 3 or even 4 eyes. They usually do not live long, perhaps a few days. But one Janus cat made history when he lived 15 years, thanks to his devoted owners who provided extraordinary care.

More recently, a Janus cat was born in Thailand in mid-July this year. Welcome to the world, little one. Best wishes for a happy life.

4. Cats injured in wildfires

"New research could change the way veterinarians treat wildfire-injured cats.
Cats who suffered burns and smoke inhalation in urban California wildfires are at risk of forming deadly blood clots, according to a new study..."
They found that cats injured in urban wildfires had a high incidence of heart problems.

Note: Might this also apply to cats who have survived house fires?

5. How to Surrender a Cat Correctly

Yes, sometimes it does become necessary to surrender a pet. Setting all judgments aside, here is some advice on how to do it properly.

"[An] animal rescue group in Evansville, Indiana, wants people to understand why it’s essential to follow proper protocols when surrendering animals to shelters..."

Please share the information in the article below with your community to educate people to do the right thing. Simply dumping them in the middle of the night at a shelter might not be any better than dumping them in random locations and can be just as deadly.

Note: Some years ago, I retrieved a box full of kittens from the front steps of a local church...as if being at a church would protect them. All had died during the freezing cold night.
