John 2:10 ... you have saved the best till now.
NEVER SECOND BEST
Today's verse is the reaction of the master of the banquet at the wedding of Cana after Jesus turned water into wine. Did the master ever taste such delicious wine?
Today Jesus shows that with Him you need never settle for less than the very best. This doesn't mean that Jesus' followers should expect to live a life of great earthly riches and luxury, eating the choicest gourmet foods, and sipping on the costliest wine. Such a life would not be best for most of us. But it does mean that our Savior God will see to it that you have what is best for you when it comes to your physical needs.
More than anything, Jesus wants you to experience the best when it comes to pardon, peace, and joy. He died the death you deserved to die so you could have all of these things and more.
As one of God's baptized children through faith in Him, there is no spiritual or eternal blessing which you do not already have. Often, however, because of a failure to fill up on His Word and Sacrament, you and I do not always fully experience or realize His best. We settle for water when we could have wine. Isn't it true that if we included Jesus more fully in our marriages and families, we'd have happier homes? Isn't it true that if we made a conscious effort to take Jesus to work with us, we'd find greater job satisfaction? Isn't it also true that our lives would carry a deeper sense of purpose if only we'd remember to turn to Jesus to fill that empty spot?
Dear Jesus, fill up every corner of our lives; and give us joy as we wait the day when we will feast with You forever in the banquet halls of heaven!
