THE COALITION WELCOMES FLORIDA’S NEW COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION
Andy Hicks, President Steve Hicks, Commissioner Gerard, Past President Robyn Rennick, and
Patricia Hardman
The Coalition of McKay Scholarship Schools and other Florida Choice Groups welcomed FLDOE Commissioner Gerard Robinson on his first day as commissioner. Commissioner Robinson has long been a proponent of school choice programs. Working both in California and Virginia school systems, the commissioner has been involved with charter schools, home schools and magnet schools. He has founded a charter school in Atlanta.
Commissioner Robinson said he has a “Sole to Soul” approach to education and believes in hands-on involvement. This approach, and his support of choice programs, was evident by his visit to our group. He joined us to discuss his desire to see choice legislation continue to move forward. “To continue to develop strong choice programs,” he said, “we have to address three areas. First, let’s admit that we have stress and challenges. Secondly, let’s develop strong coalitions to develop quality programs. Last, let’s learn from each other.”
Member of The Coalition presented Commissioner Robinson with information concerning the McKay Scholarship Program and were pleased by his depth of knowledge concerning this program.

Florida Alliance for Choice in Education
On August 8th members of The Coalition met with the Florida Alliance for Choice in Education. This is an informal group of choice programs which provides a forum for choice programs to discuss challenges, plan policy and legislative changes, and to collaborate with each other. The group meets three times a year and includes members of the Virtual Schools, Charter Programs, Corporate Tax Scholarship, Home Schools, McKay Scholarship and others.
The Coalition celebrated the passage of the 504 legislation and discussed future legislative actions. The Coalition is continuing to work on your behalf to protect the McKay Scholarship Program and to open doors for more students to participate.
