A friend of mine just called to invite me to lunch for my birthday. For me, people are more important than things, so spending time with her instead of receiving a present is the perfect gift.
I made a pact with my friends many years ago that we would no longer purchase gifts for one another. My birthday is now enjoyed over several weeks as I visit with friends.
