"Jewish Voices for a Just Peace" to protest against Israeli Rally in Johannesburg

2 August 2014

The Jewish Voices for a Just Peace (JVJP) will hold a protest against the Israeli rally taking place in Johannesburg tomorrow (Sunday, 03 August) which we view as a celebration of death and destruction. The rally in support of the Israeli attacks on Gaza which has been organised by the South African Zionist Federation (SAZF) and supported by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) is advertised as a picnic and rally in support of Israel. We are proud Jews with a conscience who stand against this celebration of the war on Palestinian civilians in Gaza, and we will not be silent in the face of such a morally abhorrent event.

In light of this, "Jewish Voices for a Just Peace" will be holding a demonstration against the Israeli rally under the following details:

Date: Sunday 3 August 2014
Time: 1:30 PM
Venue: Outside Huddle Park, Club Street, Linksfield, Johannesburg
Media is invited to attend and report

We also reject the elitist move by the organisers of the Israel rally to make the event “right of admission reserved” and demand people produce their ID books on arrival. These unprecedented measures for a public rally are further proof of Israel and its supporters paranoia and scare tactics.

We hope for a long lasting ceasefire and an end to this violence. More than that, though, we hope for a long-term peace in Israel and Palestine, a peace that can only be achieved through compassion, justice and redress, genuine negotiation and dialogue.
