A Message from Chuck Feinberg

Welcome to the November Newsletter of the New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition. Its been a very busy time since our last newsletter.  As you may know, in October the Work Group appointed by NJBPU Presdient Lee Solomon, which I chaired, released its report on recommnedations for ways in which the revised state Energy Master Plan could support the deployment of alternative fuels and vehicles. On November 1, that report was presented (and well received) at a formal Public Hearing. See the article below for more.

The NJ Clean Cities Coalition is the recipient of two new competitively awarded programs, the Northeast Regional Electric Vehicle Network Planning project (together with the State of NJ and others), and an EPA-funded project to replace old diesel engines in marine vessels operating in NY/NJ Harbor with new highly efficient and less polluting engines.  Together with our ongoing Compressed Natural Gas and other programs, these new initiatives will help advance the NJCCC's mission of advancing energy security, economic development, and emission reduction in the transportation sector.

Our activities also received significant media attention over the past few weeks, including NJ Statewide print and online news outlets, a national wire service, and a radio station.

We are participating in several events coming up which are mentioned in this Newsletter and are planning several others for the winter/spring.  I look forward to your participation and I would like to thank our stakeholders for their hard work in making New Jersey a cleaner and greener state, and in supporting the NJ Clean Cities Coalition.  As an independent 501(c)3 non-profit entity, we rely on your support for our activities.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email me at chuck.feinberg@gmail.com.  Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your families.

- Chuck Feinberg, Chairman & DOE-designated Coordinator

Advances in the Field!

New NGV Station coming to Southern New Jersey

South Jersey Gas (SJG) has begun construction of a CNG fueling station on its property in Glassboro, N.J. “This marks an exciting development for our company,” said Edward J. Graham, South Jersey Gas president and CEO. “The introduction of this station, designed specifically for fleet vehicles, is our first step in the process of expanding a natural gas fueling infrastructure throughout our region.” The facility will serve the company’s fleet vehicles and will also be open to other area fleets. The company plans to add 15 more vehicles in 2012. In addition, together with the NJ Clean Cities Coalition, SJG will work with local fleets interested in converting their vehicles to natural gas. The fueling station is expected to be completed by January.

NJ Spotlight covers our Energy Master Plan report:  Accelerating the Move to Alternatively Fueled Vehicles
New Jersey is not being aggressive enough in moving away from its reliance on gasoline and diesel fuel to alternatively fueled vehicles, clean energy advocates told state officials yesterday. While the state’s draft Energy Master Plan for the first time mentions alternative-fueled vehicles, its recommendations to move in that direction need to be broadened and deepened, according to a working group that assessed the opportunities of switching to a variety of alternatives, including electricity, natural gas, propane, and biodiesel.

DOE and EPA Release 2012 Annual Fuel Economy Guide

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are releasing the 2012 Fuel Economy Guide, providing consumers with information that can help them choose a more efficient new vehicle that saves them money and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. While fuel efficient vehicles come in a variety of fuel types, classes, and sizes, many new advanced technology vehicles debut on this year's annual list of top fuel economy performers. Fuel economy leaders within each vehicle category—from two-seaters to large SUVs—include widely available products such as conventional gasoline models and clean diesels.
