Friday again!
Where does the week go? We've been very busy these last few days booking new shows for MV & EE, DOOMSDAY STUDENT and an album launch party for DIVORCE. You can also hear us larking about on the eve of the soggy pageantry whilst playing some records here:

Busy, yes, but nothing compared to our 'three in a row' party next week! On Monday at the Shacklewell Arms we're very lucky to have the super-talented MIKAL CRONIN playing his first show here ever, plus FURROW and FAWN SPOTS are supporting. Then on Tuesday the triumphant return of R STEVIE MOORE to Upset The Rhythm will see him whipping up a storm of hits alongside the brilliant VERITY SUSMAN and FLAMINGODS at Birthdays. Whilst Wednesday is all about JACK 'LESSER' LEWIS' AWKWARD ENERGY teaming up with THE MIDDLE ONES at the Old Blue Last for melodic pastures new. If you'd like to know more about any or all of these shows read on for some heavy detail…

MIKAL CRONIN was raised in Laguna Beach, California, where as a teenager he developed a passion for both surfing and rock & roll. While attending Laguna Beach High School, he fell in with a handful of like-minded music fans, and formed a band that played local parties. After a spell as bassist in surf-punk Charlie & The Moonhearts, Mikal began working on his own garage-accented pop tapping into his love of 80's indie rock. Around the same time, Mikal also befriended kindred spirit Ty Segall, joined his live band and also collaborated on an album together called 'Reverse Shark Attack'. Mikal Cronin's self-titled album was released by Trouble in Mind Records in September 2011. Conceived and recorded as a sort of therapy to help cope with adjusting to life post-college, an ensuing break-up and geographic isolation, Mikal’s solo debut is fully realized, cohesive and beautiful, with themes as personal as they are universal; questioning your future, accepting your past and living in the moment. Taking influences such as late sixties Del Shannon and The Everly Brothers and filtering them through his own mutant California fuzz, Mikal deftly explores his singer/songwriter side that at moments feels like a punk Harry Nilsson or Curt Boettcher that balances sweet melodies and chords with chunky, psychedelic guitar freak-outs. Don’t let the opening Beach Boys-ian harmonies of “Is It Alright?” fool you into thinking this record can be easily pinned down. Once those guitars kick in, and you hit that first transcendent chorus, you’ll be hooked.

FURROW are a two piece from the village of West Felton, that create noise-laden field of punk from bass, loops and drums. Furrow draw their influences from the surrounding countryside, 80's R.E.M, Sonic Youth, 80's hardcore punk and shoegaze bands. To date they have released a s/t tape and zine which is now sold out, music available at the following link...

FAWN SPOTS are a drum-n-guitar duo from beyond the tall city walls of York. Taking cues from Black Flag as much as Xiu Xiu, Fawn Spots bathe their songs in reverb and fuzz to create an exuberant and explosive mixture of music. Fawn Spots have recently played alongside Times New Viking, Nodzzz and The Mantles so they keep good company too. You can check out three EPs on their website below, 'Gravelines' being their current release, whilst a forthcoming 7" on Louder Than War readies.

R. STEVIE MOORE is a true original. Improviser, composer, arranger, producer, comedy writer, vocal stylist, sketchpad artist, self-taught instrumentalist and bon vivant, R. Stevie Moore was born in 1952 in Nashville to famed Elvis bass player Bob Moore. Since 1966 RSM has recorded nearly 2000 songs, he's the "Godfather of Home Recording", producing and self-distributing over 400 albums covering an alarmingly idiosyncratic variety of music. RSM has worked on numerous collaborations with a variety of musicians and artists including long-term friend, Ariel Pink, David Shrigley, John Maus, Jad Fair and Mike Watt, and his influence on the wider world of DIY music is difficult to over-estimate. After remaining a virtually unknown cult progressive popster for the best part of 40 years RSM redressed the balance last year with his first tour around the world, now he's back in London after an unforgettable performance for us last Summer. This year has been equally keen, already seeing RSM release a 7" on O Genesis, and an EP with Ariel Pink on Slow Boy, whilst his face presently adorns this month's Wire magazine in all it's bearded glory.

VERITY SUSMAN is a founding member of the hypnotic rock ensemble Electrelane for whom she played guitar, keyboards and sang. Alongside Electrelane, she also experimented with song form and noisier passages with her Vera November project which naturally led onto Verity's solo work. With a greater focus on electronics and saxophone, Verity's present sound strides into improvised, psychedelic realms, only complimented further by mesmeric visuals.

FLAMINGODS are a five piece multi-instrumental experimental band founded by Kamal Rasool in late 2009 as a bedroom project. Their sound has been described as ethnic pop, with elements of noise, tribal and freaked folk. They use a number of percussion instruments collected during Rasool's travels to places like Tanzania and the Amazon. Their live shows are considerably different to recorded material, often exploring and energizing sounds heard on the albums. They are based in London, and have several releases available, the most recent being a tape on Belly Kids.

JACK LESSER LEWIS' AWKWARD ENERGY
THE MIDDLE ONES
Wednesday 13 June
Old Blue Last, 38 Great Eastern Street, Shoreditch, EC2A 3ES
8pm | £6.00 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/165113
JACK LESSER LEWIS' AWKWARD ENERGY are a group from Portland, Oregon founded by the songwriter Jack Lewis; best known as bass player and singer for his brother’s band Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard. Despite the self-deprecating moniker, Jack Lesser Lewis is in comfortable possession of a style every bit as noteworthy as that of his brother, whereas the latter employs words by the deluge, Jack and his band Awkward Energy tend to favor far more melody and far less vicious satire in their muttering compositions. A conversation with the pushy-neighborhood cat, a haunted library, trying to get some friends to dance on new years day, the dangers and joys of nature, and the confusing beginnings of a relationship. These are some of the stories that appear on Jack's new album ‘Lvov Swims the Willamette’ on Stitch Stitch Records, reflecting Jack’s constant, restless exploratory nature. ‘Lvov Swims The Willamette’ is a continuation of Lewis’ ‘Lvov Cycle’ which includes Lvov’s Lament (2002), Lvov Reads His Notes (2004) and Lvov Goes To Emandee (2006). Jack has also collaborated with the French band Herman Dune on numerous albums including their newest ‘Strange Moosic’. Since 2001 he has toured the world with the likes of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, The Vaselines, The Mountain Goats, The Cribs and The Thermals, and was was also part of the supergroup, The Bundles on K Records which included his brother Jeff, Kimya Dawson and Karl Blau.

THE MIDDLE ONES are Anna Knowles (guitar, vocals) and Grace Denton (accordion, percussion, vocals) and both hail from the north of England, but formed the band whilst at university in Norwich. Over the last couple of years they have won fans from around the world, shared the stage with the likes of Jeffrey Lewis and Calvin Johnson, and toured with Rose Melberg and Best Friends Forever. Their debut album, It Is The Rehearsal That Will Make This (Stitch-Stitch/Discount Horse) is a triumph of melody and beautiful echoing tenderness. Vocal harmonies weave tender, honest songs that betray a knowing melancholie, as well as a care-free, starry-eyed joy for life - a joy for simply singing, for stamping feet, for shouting out loud.

In other news Talk Normal have sadly had to cancel their show with us next month because of crazy expensive plane tickets, but look out November for their proper post-album return. Thanks for reading this and have the best weekend,
