Wednesday 14 September

Next Wednesday we welcome to Bristol, Tony Gervis FRPS, who will be regaling us with his talk - 2019: An amazing year of travel and photography.
Tony is a photographic presenter and lecturer who is just a few months past his 80th birthday, and who retired from his own investment brokerage business at the age of 50. Tony has been photographing purely as an amateur for over 60 years and has quite an amateur photographer's CV: he's travelled to 117 different countries, photographed the USA in 42 of the past 50 years, having visited every state at least twice along with 175 State or National parks; in 2013 he was even offered the position of an official photographer for the
National Parks of America. His lecturing CV is no less impressive, having been 8 years cruise lecturing on photography and camera club lecturing for over 15  years.
His talk "2019: An amazing year of travel and photography“ covers 26 weeks of cruise lecturing on photography, 9 weeks travel and photography in America, 42 different countries, over 40,000 photos AND a whole lot more - be prepared to be amazed!

DI Group
All members are invited to the next Digital Group (zoom) meeting on Monday 12 September at 7.30 pm.

Last month we had some brilliant presentations from members. Tim Barker showed some wonderful images from a remote, off the beaten track Scottish island. A variety of images of different styles including creative were presented by Steve Field, Colin Dixon, David Alderson and John Hudson to give some interesting ideas for photography projects.

The new season of competitions has just started so if you wish to ask for constructive comments from your fellow members, please send your presentations for the DI meeting on Monday. You are also welcome to send in your images for us all to admire or raise questions on digital imaging at the meetings which are informal. Please don’t wait for the October meeting as I am hoping to have one speaker for the whole evening, subject to confirmation. If you just enjoy watching, you are welcome, too.

As usual, please send your images to me (dig@bristolphoto.org.uk) no later than 6pm Sunday 11 September. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Print Competition Round 1 - Closing Date
The closing date for the first print round of the new season is Wednesday, 28 September. Prints can be left in the box in Unit 13 as usual or can be left at Wex during shop hours if you are not attending club meetings in person.

Club level entrants may submit a maximum of 3 prints in each round of the competition. Intermediate and Advanced entrants may submit a maximum of 2 images. Across the four rounds these points are accumulated. Trophies are presented in each of the 3 levels (Club, Intermediate, and Advanced) to the holders of the highest number of points at the end of the four rounds. The trophies will be presented at the club AGM.

Prescribed Topic Challenge
For entrants at all levels, one of their 3 or 2 images may be submitted for an optional Prescribed topic challenge in each round. These will be judged together, regardless of the entrant’s level. This entry must be identified by ticking the box on the print label. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will also accrue to the entrant’s score at the appropriate level.
A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with an award for the winner at the end of the season.

The judge for Round 1 of the print competition will be Ed Cloutman EFIAP, Hon FWPF and the optional Prescribed topic for this round is Wood.

You can download labels for your prints from the Members’ Portal on the website.

As became established practice last year, you should supply a digital copy of each print you enter. This should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there will be no need to give any other information than the title and your name.  You don’t need to add your membership number or level of entry.
Please upload the digital copies of your prints by following this link: bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload

Let’s hope for a great start to the print competition year!  Please contact me at printcompetitions@bristolphoto.org.uk if you have any questions or problems.

BPS Website
A huge pat on the back is due to Matt de Beger for all his efforts in creating the BPS website. The Photographic Society of America runs an annual competition for camera club websites; last year the BPS website came a very creditable 4th place, but this year Matt has done us proud by doing even better, coming 2nd in the Large Club category. Matt got some pretty amazing scores in the various judging classifications: Home Page 33/35, Content 35/40, Features 28/30, Technical 32/35 and Judges' discretion 10/10 - overall 138/150 (92%).

The judge's comments were "I was very impressed by the detail available to the members such as course and lecture material, newsletter archive, meeting schedule  and a host of other member details. This site is very well done. And should be emulated by other clubs." (Note from Ed: Judge's grammar 7/10 - but I suppose he is American!)

This is all very impressive, so well done Matt and thanks.

Message to BPS members following 4 September

On behalf of the Marsden family and myself, I just wanted to say a big 'Thank you' to everyone who came along to the Clubrooms on Sunday 4 September, to celebrate our parents, Jim, Elizabeth and Bob, with us. It was wonderful to be surrounded by so many of our parents’ friends, who cared so much about them too.
Thank you for all your kind words and for sharing your memories with us – it meant a lot and was very comforting. We humbly apologise if we didn’t manage to chat with you all and, the limited time we had to spend with each of you – as you were no doubt aware, it was quite a busy couple of hours!

We hope you enjoyed looking at the display of Bob and Jim’s prints, photo books etc - we thought they made an excellent and varied display. I must apologise however, for the misunderstanding about the Card sculptures displayed on Bob’s tables! I should have made it clear that Dad/Bob didn’t actually make the cards himself – they were made by Japanese artists Masahiro Chatani and Keiko Nakazawa and I simply bought them for Dad, knowing full well he could make good use of them to produce some colourful photographs!

We will no doubt ‘see you around’ (mostly via Zoom) and please keep in touch with us. Meanwhile, take care, stay safe and I wish you all a successful photographic year ahead.

Very best wishes and thanks,

Paula Wride (nee Faris)
