NEWCASTLE BEAD FAIR REPORT

Newcastle is a beautiful city. The bridges remind me of Porto in Portugal. However, it’s a long way, over 5-hours drive from Norwich – and not so many visitors at the Gem n Bead Fair there. Plus it takes 3-days and nights as we setup on the Friday. So maybe we won’t be doing this one next year. Especially as we have another show just 60-miles north, at Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

QR CODES HELP BEADERS

I only learnt to use QR codes about a year ago – so there must be beaders out there, that still don’t know what they’re for. QR codes are a fast way to go directly to a website. You just switch the camera on, on your phone or tablet, point it to the QR code, and click the URL (website address) that appears.

Brilliant for complicated URLs. It’s especially useful where the website address is on printed matter, rather than online (where you just need to click). For instance, to go to our 2022 list of bead fairs, rather than copy https://mrbeadshop.com/pages/bead-fairs-2022, just point your camera to the QR on the left on the online newsletter version.

GOLD COLOUR BEADS

The colours you choose say a lot about you. They reveal what’s in your head, innermost feelings and emotions. They’re part of your personality. However, when you design jewellery for profit, don’t let your personal likes influence what you make. Each colour creates an effect on other people and has a meaning. Gold is the colour of success, achievement, optimism and positivity. All over the world gold is associated with wealth and triumph.

Wearing anything gold-coloured doesn’t just reflect these qualities to others. The colour’s psychology brings you optimism, wisdom and enlightenment too – helping to build your spiritual self. A Yang colour, full of masculine energy and power of the sun. Unlike silver, which is associated with female energy.

THE BENEFITS OF HEMATITE BEADS

Hematite makes great jewellery because it’s inexpensive, shiny and sleek. It’s one of the most common minerals, formed by oxidized iron. Although usually black, beads are now available in all colours.

Hematite’s properties come from iron and oxygen. Some say it’s protective with energy to connect with your spirit and the Earth – used in meditation to escape the illusionary chains of physical reality. It also bolsters low self-esteem, making you feel more comfortable. Most of our hematite beads are non-magnetic, because magnetism misshapes jewellery design. Hematite is good for those born under the zodiac sign of Virgo.

Picture on the online newsletter version, shows an old advert from a popular British newspaper for a simple magnetic bracelet for £17.95. Illustrating what price your customers’ are willing to pay for this type of jewellery.

Magnetic Hematite
Hematite makes great jewellery because it’s inexpensive, shiny and sleek. People wear it as rings, bracelets and necklaces not only for style, but because they believe the magnetic variety relieves rheumatism. Magnetic therapy has been around for over 4,000 years.

Bio-magnetic bracelets are becoming popular again. Some swear, not only do they look good; the magnetism makes them feel better too. Therapists claim they can cure disorders and the magnetism relieves pain and stress, especially if the bracelet is worn on the area of reflexive points. It’s also said to protect from harmful radiation caused from every-days appliances like microwave ovens, mobile phones and televisions. The idea is that magnetic fields relax capillary walls in the body by increasing blood flow, similar to effects of massaging muscles. The average person has 3 to 4gms of iron in their blood. When this is magnetized, circulation increases. Others say, magnetic jewellery allows the body to produce endorphins, the natural pain killers.

Other Hematite
Not all hematite is magnetic. Sometimes the magnetic attraction can be a disadvantage to jewellery design – pulling metal from other components. There is also a new type of hematite bead giving yet another angle to this versatile metal. Its aurora borealis coating gives a multi-coloured effect when turned – which is striking on illuminated jewellery at night.

What Is Hematite?
Hematite is one of the most common minerals, being the principle ore of iron. The colour of most red rock, like sandstone, is caused by small amounts of hematite.

All non-crystalline forms of hematite are transformations of the mineral Limonite that lost water, possibly due to heat. Hence the recent excitement of the discovery of grey hematite on the planet Mars, suggesting there was once water present. Only well formed hematite crystals are cut and polished into cabochons for jewellery, beads, and ornaments.
