Next week sees a return visit to BPS by Slawek Stasczuk who will be presenting his talk Landscape: The Art of Seeing.
This talk builds on the concepts Slawek presented in the first visit, particularly composition, anticipation and imagination.

ZOOM
Owing to planned rail strikes, this talk was scheduled to be Zoomed into the clubrooms. However, following the RMT's discovery of compassion, the strikes have been moved to avoid Royal British Legion Poppy Day, which means that Slawek will now be able to travel to Bristol on Wednesday - so it will be a live presentation.

PAGB Inter Club Print Championship |
Blackburn - 22 October
Photo: Rod Whelans
Ralph Snook and Mike Martin battled the traffic on Friday night to get up North ready for battle on Saturday.
All the usual suspects were there, our Round 1 entries submitted and we waited.
It’s always interesting to see what is ‘in favour’ on the day: Black Country Museum set-ups, sport (especially rugby, diving, gymnastics) and nature was, as always, extremely strong. Dance seemed ‘out of favour’, landscapes few and far between whilst portraits and travel shots seemed to vary.
So it was that we saw ourselves mid table after Round 1 meaning we were to compete in the Plate competition. Having made our selection, retaining the highest scorers and replacing others, our attempt to ‘anticipate’ what may be received favourably, didn’t quite make it. We finished a commendable equal 3rd, only 3 points behind the winners. So, if we are to compete next year, we have to earn a place in the new WCPF PRINT battle being held along with DPIC on 5 Feb 2023. A slight comfort is that we finished ahead of Dorchester and Nonpariel, thereby retaining our position as the highest ranked WCPF club.
For the stats geeks, we averaged just over 12 in the Plate, an improvement over the 11.6 in Round 1, but by comparison, Catchlight (Overall winners) averaged an astonishing 13.4 in the final. We still have some way to go to match them. We didn’t come away empty handed though – Ralph won a box of paper in the raffle.
Learning for next year.... we need a greater breadth of material, particularly sport and character portraits (preferably in the Black Country museum! So, get out there with your cameras (please).

Do You Fancy Being A Judge? |
Would you like to be a judge or are you interested in the judging process? Learn the fundamental skills by attending the next WCPF judging seminar.
After a gap of more than 3 years the WCPF is now able to resume training judges. This is of great importance as during this time a large number of judges have either retired or unfortunately died. To this end we have arranged for a Judging Seminar to take place at the Wicklea Academy, Wick Road, St Annes, Bristol BS4 4HR on Saturday 19 November 2022.
There are still a number of places available for this event which is subsidised by the WCPF at a cost of £10. Attendees are not obliged to become judges, the event is open to all interested in the skills required to be a judge.
For those living in the North of the Federation, this is an ideal opportunity to attend a seminar locally. More information and an application form (to be returned immediately) can be obtained by contacting dijohn.tilsley@waitrose.com
We will be resuming the judging Seminars in their usual April slot in the WCPF calendar next year, when the event will be held at the Judith Telfer Centre, Exmouth Community College, Gipsy Lane, Exmouth, EX8 3AF on Saturday 22 April 2023.
