SCRIPTURE ALONE: CREATION

When we think of the teaching of "Scripture Alone" we often center on the doctrine of justification, and with good reason. Justification is the most important aspect of our faith. Without it, we would have no hope of true salvation in Jesus Christ, but we would instead be dependent on ourselves. The Bible is certainly clear that Scripture alone contains the key to salvation, but another interesting part of Scripture is that God has made this the way He has revealed His will from the very beginning. Scripture alone was not a religious anomaly that developed in the Reformation. It has always been God's way.

We see this first of all at creation. The first display of creative power came in words, in Scripture, as God said, "Let there be light." Lest we be tempted to think this was just some figurative picture, God reinforced the truth throughout the rest of His Word. Psalm 33:6 says, "By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host." Hebrews 11:3 likewise records, "By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible." The universe and everything in it was created by the word of God, by Scripture alone.

If God's Word was good enough to create life out of nothing and to bring forth design from nothing, it can certainly be effective today for you. Very parallel to the physical creation at the beginning is the spiritual creation of the Holy Spirit. By nature, in our hearts, we are very much like the void of nothingness before creation. God calls us to life and light by His Word when the gospel of Christ comes in our lives.
