Matthew 4:18-20 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him.
CALLED TO SHARE OUR CHRIST LIGHT
This Bible account tells how Jesus walked down to Lake Galilee's shoreline one day. Upon seeing two brothers engaged in their fishing vocation, He invited them to follow Him so that He might make them fishers of men. Hearing the Lord’s invitation, they left their smelly fish-nets lying on the beach and went with Him.
From this we see the power Jesus has to inspire those whom He has rescued from unbelief's darkness to joyful service in His Kingdom. Peter and Andrew already trusted in Him as Savior. Now they received the call to change their life vocation. Instead of pulling in fish from the sea using nets made of rope, they were to give themselves to the task of casting forth the Gospel net and harvesting souls for heaven! It’s something Jesus' love inspired them to do with eagerness.
He does the same for us today. True, He doesn't call all Christians to full-time service in His kingdom. But He has called all disciples -- in whatever station in life He has placed us -- to engage in the work of sharing our beautiful Christ Light so more souls may be won for heaven. And it's something His love still inspires us to do.
By the way, it's worth noting the two brothers didn't possess any special qualifications for serving as "fishers of men." They had received no training in public speaking. They were common, everyday, blue-collar workers. Humanly speaking, the least likely candidates to be picked for this work. But Jesus called them and then supplied them with the skill and zeal they required for their calling. How encouraging to know He promises to equip us too for the work He has given us of reeling in souls for heaven.
