Next Wednesday we welcome Tony Pioli FBPE FRPS from Chapel-en-le-Frith Camera Club. Tony is a self-taught photographer, who's interest in photography began in early childhood and led to a lifelong interest in photography, initially monochrome and subsequently colour transparencies, the latter being more suited to combining Tony's intense interest in the natural world with his love of photography. Early successes, which continued such that in 2005 he was awarded the prestigious ABPE qualification, this was followed in 2011 by the acquisition of the highest exhibition award, FBPE. He was awarded an ARPS in 2000, and subsequently an FRPS in 2011. Wednesday's talk is called Nature on our Doorstep and includes images of large & small animals, rodents, amphibians, reptiles, insects, flowers, fungi & other plants photographed in the UK and, more especially, the North Midlands. What is more intriguing is that this is a slide talk, something that might be quite strange to some of our newer members - slides are 2" square bits of plastic which are dropped into a thing called a slide projector - this evening should be both interesting from the picture point of view and also from the "Antiques Roadshow" aspect.

Next Monday, 16 July, there is meeting of the Print Group will be held at the clubrooms at 7.30pm. Members who are looking to gain photographic distinctions are welcome to come along to get advice on their prints from Pete McCloskey and Andrew Marker.

Applications for places on the 2018 BPS Photography Course are now open. Please visit the BPS website by clicking here for further details. It is worth noting that if you are thinking of joining the course, then a £30 discount applies to BPS members.
Please remember that the revenue from the course is one of the main methods that the Society has of keeping your subscriptions as low as they are (despite the latest increase) and that publicity is the key to a successful course. Could you, therefore, please tell anyone you know who is vaguely interested in learning about photography about the course. If you have a Facebook account please publicise it on your page. You can download a copy of the flyer/poster to include in your FB page by following this link. It's worth noting that out of 130+ members, very many with FB pages, only one member appears to have downloaded the poster - we really ought to be doing far better than this!

Photographic Society of America Interclub Travel Competition
|
The Society take part in an interclub competition organised by Greg Duncan on behalf of the Photographic Society of America (PSA) Travel Division.
There are several sections and we take part in a section with 18 other clubs who are all members of the PSA.
This year we finished third overall, having won the last round.
The league was won by Delaware PS, followed by Cape Cod Viewfinders CC.
We now take part in a ‘play-off’ for which we have to submit 8 pictures by July 20th.
For each round we had to submit a set of 6 pictures, which I take from our bi-monthly DPI competition, HC’s and above.
In the last round we had awards for the following:
3rd Lunchtime by Derwood Pamphilon
HM Ploughing in the Palouse by John Chamberlin
HM Shaping Brass Pots by Ashwin Chauhan
HM Waiting to be served by Sue O’Connell
Earlier, we had a 1st place in Round 1 with John Chamberlin’s ‘Winter Grazing’ and in Round 2 a 2nd place with Derwood Pamphilon’s ‘Burma’.

The next Studio event will be an all-day lighting masterclass on Friday 3 August, the model will be Tara Sumnera a full-time agency represented fashion model who has appeared in Elle magazine, Vogue Italia, Fitnet magazine (front cover) and has worked with Channel 4
We will also have Darren Fellows who is the Technical Advisor and resident photographer for Rotolight who will bring the Rotolight selection of LED lights.
This should be a great day, the cost will be £30 to include the model and lunch Darren will demonstrate the lighting and give tutorials and there will be plenty of time to photograph Tara using the different set ups. The session will start at 10.00am and finish at 4.00pm, the last hour of which will be a tutorial on how to process the images from the day in Lightroom and Photoshop.
To book on and pay please use this link. It is a private event so there is a password to enter the page, the password is - Bristolps
We are expecting this to be a well-attended event and that the parking may be an issue as we do not expect there will be enough parking spaces as it’s a working day and all the other units on the estate will be in use so please think about parking elsewhere or perhaps using the train.

Warwick - Important Notice, Change of Venue
|
Due to the over-run of the upgrading work on the usual Theatre used, we have been offered the Butterworth Theatre in the same building for this year’s Championship. It is a great deal larger but the lower area tiered seating (500+ seats) will be used.
The access to the building will be the same as every other year through the glass doors in front of you as you come out of Car Park 7.
We will be using the Foyer as you come through the entrance and then along the left-hand wall past the Booking Office, and the Café on your right, you will find another Foyer area where the entrance to the Butterworth Theatre is on the left.
In this area you will find the Programmes and Badge Holders being issued and Raffle Tickets sold. We also expect to have 7 Trade Stands for our sponsors in the areas.
There will be no access to the Theatre until at least 9.30am as we have to start again learning the set-up.
Admission is by ticket purchased in advance.

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
|
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.
Please note, the meeting scheduled for Monday July 23rd (Producing B & W images in Lightroom) has had to be postponed. Watch this space for the revised date.....
The following is from BTW leader, David Grierson:
YouTube: Many members have mentioned certain names who have great learning sites on YouTube. What I’d like to create is a database of these names, so we can all benefit.
A couple I use are:
- Anthony Morganti - click here
- Photos in colour - click here
Following on from the recent talk on mount cutters by Longridge, they have now written to say that members can get a discount on the cutters, however to get this discount, orders will have to be placed over the phone, quoting Bristol Photographic Society and Chris Longridge.

|
ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.
|
Sue O’Connell: two awards in Balearic Islands (one gold and one FIAP ribbon) plus two in recent Queensland circuit (one silver and one HM) - Well done.
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
|
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address. |
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
|
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it
would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that
she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue
to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol
know.
