A TRIBUTE TO OUR VOLUNTEERS:
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEK
"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen nor touched...but felt in the heart."
--Helen Keller
The dollar value attributed to volunteer time by the Independent Sector is $22.79/hour; which means that in just the first three months of this year, L.A. Works volunteers have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Southern California economy. But this dollar value is only a small symbol of your true value to the Los Angeles community.
For national volunteer appreciation week in April, we would like to recognize all of our volunteers who have spent time mentoring, tutoring, and visiting with at-risk children, painting and revitalizing our schools and community centers, caring for animals, visiting with the elderly, planting, gardening, trail maintenance, increasing accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and so much more. Your heart, commitment, time, and efforts are truly priceless to Los Angeles. Thank you all!!!!

GoodSearch will donate $1 to L.A. Works for every toolbar that is downloaded between April 6th at 9am EST and April 9th at 9am EST up to $5,000!! Please download the toolbar right now by following this link http://www.goodsearch.com/toolbar/l-a-works-la-works
The L.A. Works toolbar is free to download and allows you to raise money for our cause every time you shop or search online! Once added to IE or Firefox, each time you shop at more than 1,300 stores (from Amazon to Zazzle!) a percentage of your purchase will automatically be donated to L.A. Works - at no cost to you (and you may even save money as the toolbar provides coupons and deals as well!). Please do this now so that we can earn the $1 bonus per toolbar!
And, please pass this along to all of your friends. The two minutes it takes to add this toolbar to your browser can make a difference to L.A. Works!

GILBERT GONZALES' 2ND ANNIVERSARY
Without our Director of Programs, L.A. Works would not touch as many lives as we are able to do on a daily basis! We are so lucky to have Gilbert Gonzales, former Peace Corps member (Jordon) and S.F. State Alum with NY Cares & Rock Corps experience, as part of our team.
In his two years with L.A. Works, Gilbert has more than doubled the opportunities available through L.A. Works!! Gilbert is a proud Angelino, having grown up in the San Fernando Valley and a current resident of Highland Park. Congratulations Gilbert on all you have accomplished in these past two years with us, we look forward to many more successful years to come!

THE FINAL 8
L.A. Works and the Los Angeles Magazine Foundation sponsored a month-long competition, Get L.A., designed to get Angelenos thinking and talking critically about what it means to live, work, and play in Los Angeles. The winners will be announced on April 16th at City Hall with a special screening and reception. Other prizes include coverage in Los Angeles Magazine and a meeting with a top entertainment agent or studio executive. Watch the Get L.A. finalists here, then return on April 16 when we will post the "Audience Selection" and "Official Selection" winners along with highlights from the competition and favorite non-finalist films.

CALL FOR ACTION:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
EARTH DAY AND L.A. WORKS DAY: If you are interested in taking a leadership role in L.A. Works' Earth Day (April 22) OR L.A. Works Day (June 12) – either planning prior to the event or on the day as a task captain, please contact Porsha Pearson.
ALLTHIS.COM: Currently, if you want to support L.A. Works’ ongoing programs with a donation, you have a few options – write a check and add the GoodSearch toolbar to your internet browser. Now we have one more entrepreneurial way to support us! Allthis.com turns your time into cash that then goes directly to L.A. Works.
The most famous example of this type of donation is Warren Buffet who auctions off a lunch with himself every year to benefit Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco. That particular item sells for more than $2 million, but the concept can be applied to anyone who wants to contribute to a cause. A plumber can donate a house call, a lawyer a will preparation, a personal trainer a series of workout sessions. A local fire department can donate a ride on the fire engine, a college admissions counselor a college application prep session, a pro athlete can give tips to a high school student, a celebrity can record your outgoing voice mail message, a businessperson can donate 30 minutes of his time to hear a new idea, have a product pitched or give his advice on a particular problem.
Using the Internet to create a marketplace for people’s time, allthis.com has the chance to become the single largest charitable force on the planet. In order to be involved, we will need 10 individuals to join the L.A. Works team and put their interest/skill up for auction. For more information, or to join the L.A. Works team, please contact Debbie@laworks.com.
Volunteer: And there are over 80+ volunteer opportunities listed each month on L.A. Works' volunteer calendar and hundreds of nonprofit community partners who are looking for volunteers to assist them in achieving their missions. And there is still space available for projects scheduled for tomorrow!
