Farm Fresh News - May 2015
Hi Friends,
As a number of you may know, one of my "day jobs" is designing and hosting web sites. To stay up with changing technology, now all web sites need to be compatible with SmartPhones, a "responsive" format that resizes the layout based on the size and dimensions of the viewer's screen. I am in the process of converting the various web sites I host. This includes, in addition to my company site Village Media, the one for The Farm Midwifery Workshops, the site I set up for my wife Deborah to promote her midwifery services, and the web site for Swan Conservation Trust. The Farm's web site is on my list, but that's going to be a big project.
One thing I particularly like about this work is that it allows me to be creative, and take care of clients from across the country, all from my log cabin in Tennessee, while looking out my windows to the woods below.
Do let me know if I can be of service to you.
Join us for the first annual birthworkers retreat and on Memorial Day Weekend at my annual conference  on Community and Sustainability.

Peace, Douglas

You really can grow most of the food your family needs.
With this 5 day intensive, we'll garden every morning and every afternoon we'll visit other permaculture homesteads and gardens, including Amish country. I'll also have suits so we can go into the bee hives.

"The organic gardening weekend was a beautiful experience. We found tons to keep us busy, from harvesting honey to touring permaculture farms in the area. I was so happy i got to visit The Farm and see life in an intentional community as well."

Farm School Family Fun Day May 9
  • May Pole
  • Talent Show
  • Woods Hike and Creek Walk
  • Ecovillage Tour
  • Food
  • Camping
The Farm School invites your family to join us on Saturday May 9th, 2015 for a fun-filled day here at The Farm School Solar Campus in Summertown, TN.
This event is intended for families everywhere! This year, we surveyed our Satellite Campus Families and other home based learners in our extended community and asked them to tell us what type of activities they wanted and to suggest an affordable price. They answered and we listened!
The Farm School will have a food vending table that opens at 11am, but families are also quite welcome to bring in a cooler with personal food and beverage (no alcohol allowed).
For families traveling some distance to attend the event, we also offer on-site camping near the school at a rate of $10 per night (per tent) while spaces last. Other on-Farm overnight accommodations are available on a first come basis and rates will vary. Please let us know if you would like a contact list for Farm residents who offer overnight accommodations.
Our Family Fun Day will officially begin at 11:00 am with a very brief orientation and then we will have some time to “eat & greet” outside in the front yard.
At Noon, Farm School parent Alayne Griffin will lead all who wish to participate in a Maypole ceremony. The Maypole will be followed by activities for students including Fairy Village Building and Face Painting.
While the student activities are ongoing, Principal Peter Kindfield will be available for a demonstration of how our Agile Fridays work here at school or a natural learning workshop – all depending on what the attending parents want as a group.
We have time set aside for an “unplugged” talent show open to all ages before we gather up and head into the woods for a guided hike and creek walk to the nearby Ecovillage Training Center (ETC). After a tour of the ETC by eco-wizard, JaySun DaGreen, the group will return to the school for closing circle.
Advance admission prices: Just $6 per person with a flat $30 rate for families of more than five.
No charge for ages 3 and under. (All persons under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.)
On-site camping near the school at a rate of $10 per night.
Advance pricing is available until Thursday May 7th. After that, admission will be $10 per person so REGISTER TODAY!

Green Living Journal, Issue 18

If you are curious about what other types of alternatives are going on in Middle Tennessee, then check out the 18th edition of the Green Living Journal, published by a group of our friends in the area called The Cumberland Greens. The name refers to the Cumberland River in Nashville and the Green River in Kentucky, two important watersheds in our region. They print 1,000 copies and give away about 400 of those at the Earth Day event on the campus of Vanderbilt University. The rest are given away and distributed throughout our area. Green Living Journal is also available online where many of the pictures are in color. The group (which includes many of us at The Farm) hosts several gatherings and plant swaps throughout the year. It is a time to see old friends and make new ones, play music around the campfire, and do all the good things we hippies do.
Here is a list of a few articles included in the current issue:
The Ten Key Values of the Green Party - Books to Kids - The Green Principle of Feminism and Gender Equality - Poems - Year-round Home Food Production - Getting Started with Chickens the Easy Way - Things You May Not Know About Earthworms - Sunspaces with Low Thermal Mass - Green Money Power for the Green Economy - Germantown Commons: Cohousing Success Story  Read Online
