Wednesday 6 September

We kick off the new 2023-24 programme, as is now customary, with the Chairman's Evening. Ralph has provided a few words and happy snaps to whet your appetite:

This is when I get a chance to put something together that will hopefully keep you in your seats for an hour or so. My usual approach to this (and many other things) would be to do this just in time, ie on the Monday or even Tuesday before the event. However, the gentle persuasion(!) of our Newsletter Editor has requested some up front information a week in advance.
As I seem to have spent a lot of Wednesdays away from Unit 13 over the last 8/9 months, I thought that some evidence that I was actually travelling rather than playing hookie, would be in order. So, you can expect an evening of images and anecdotes from Kenya, Botswana/SA and Patagonia. As you would expect predominantly wildlife, but there could be some others thrown in, and of course some of the blurred images everyone loves!!, along with some different takes on some subjects.

Looking forward to it, see you there. In the meantime, here are a few images to be going on with:

DI Group
DI Group (zoom) meeting – Monday 11 September

Last DIG meeting in August was a full evening of presentations of a variety of images from music festival, bird and wildlife, drone, dance, unique portraits and creative. The next DI group meeting is on Monday 11 September, in about ten days time. The meeting is open to all BPS members and you are welcome to share your images with fellow members. The new season of club competitions is already upon us and this is a chance for you to get a second opinion on your images at the DI meeting from your fellow members. If you enjoy displaying your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere or ask questions on digital imaging you are welcome to join.

When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm-ish  Sunday 10 September. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

DI Group - Your Opinions Matter
The DI group has been meeting for over 20 years, the last three of which have been on zoom since the lockdown. It is time to return to the clubroom but still continue as hybrid on zoom. A lot has changed since the beginning - new members, continuing development with hardware and editing software, rising standards in photography and lots more.

The aims of the DI group to provide contact, mutual support and exchange of ideas in an informal atmosphere remain the same. This seems an ideal opportunity to review what members would like to see happen in these meetings. I hope you will take a few minutes to take a look at the short survey form by clicking on the link  https://forms.office.com/e/3ximCyWPEE and fill in as many answers as relevant.

You will see the complete form after you select one of the options in Q1, which I hope you will do even if you do not intend to attend DI meetings, as this will give you an idea of what activities are possible. I am aware that filling in forms can be a pain but your cooperation will be very much appreciated.

Future Meeting
On 20 March next year, we have Jeanette Lendon visiting to talk about SmartPhone photography and how we can extract the best from our mobile devices. To follow this up, she has offered to stay over in Bristol and lead a “SmartPhone Safari” the next day (Thursday 21 March) to practice and develop some of the skills and practices she covers in her talk. The cost would be approx. £30 each depending on numbers interested. If this is something that you might be interested in, please can you let Jay know to see if we have enough interest to make it worth while her doing it.

Cheers

Jay

Mentoring Evening
The next Distinctions Advisory Workshop will take place at Unit 13 on Monday, 4 September, starting at 19:30. The advice will be given by Pete McCloskey FRPS, Andrew Marker FRPS and Ralph Snook ARPS.

This workshop will be aimed at prints only and is mainly for members thinking of an RPS distinction. However, although the evening will be aimed at RPS distinctions, any advice will clearly be useful if you are thinking of submitting for a PAGB Distinction.

Future workshops will vary in content, including specific advice on PAGB Distinctions and digital submissions.

If you are interested in this workshop, please get in touch making sure that you include all three of the following:

Beyond The Wall - Still A Few Places Left
A TRIP TO SHEPTON MALLET PRISON AND DOWNSIDE ABBEY

I am exploring the opportunity to arrange a trip to the historic Shepton Mallet Prison https://www.sheptonmalletprison.com/ to photograph the interior/exterior. As it is open to the public I have managed to get us exclusive access at the end of the day from 5.00-6.30pm along with general admission from 12.00 noon on the same day. There is a requirement for a minimum of 20 people to attend at a cost of £20 pp.

There is also the opportunity to visit Downside Abbey at Stratton on the Fosse  www.downsideabbey.co.uk on the morning of the same day and entrance is free. I have visited the abbey on several occasions and it is stunning!

I am looking at  dates in mid October probably on a Tuesday or Thursday. If you are interested please let me know either by email: mike.hall95@btinternet.com or by text/tel: 07765 819640

Thanks

FIAP News
FIAP Print Requirements for 2024 Onwards

During the Covid-19 pandemic and associated lockdown situations worldwide, FIAP temporarily removed the requirement for print acceptances in AFIAP and EFIAP distinction applications.

FIAP have confirmed that this temporary removal of the requirement will not apply for distinction applications in 2024.

This means that anyone who wishes to apply for the AFIAP or EFIAP distinction in 2024 will have to meet the print requirements.

These are:
  • For AFIAP you must have at least 4 acceptances with 4 different images in print sections of Salons
  • For EFIAP you must have at least 12 acceptances with 12 different images in print sections of Salons. These can include the 4 used for your AFIAP distinction
In all cases you can also have digital image acceptances for the same images.

The requirement for prints never applied for the other FIAP Distinctions - only for AFIAP and EFIAP. So those applying for any of the other FIAP distinctions do not need to have print acceptances - though it must be said that supporting print salons is important so that we can maintain the wonderful tradition of the printed image.

Stereoscopy at the Suspension Bridge
We have received the following from The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust:

Denis Pellerin of the Brian May Archive of Stereoscopy will be coming to the bridge to give a talk on Saturday 30 September at 2pm. This will be an interesting and informative look at the history of Victorian photographic techniques, with a focus on the monumental architecture of the time. (There is also to be a workshop on taking stereoscopic images with a smartphone this same afternoon, but details are still tbc.)

There is also a talk coming up with Simon Williams, whose Balloon Fiesta photographs recently made the news – The Beauty and Craft of Early Wetplate Collodion Photography. Tickets are £6 and it consists of a talk and live demonstration on the morning of Sunday 29 October.

We also have a number of pinhole photography workshops with Justin Quinnell on 2 and 3 Sept, which are a tremendously fun way to explore taking unusual images and a nice introduction to the darkroom for folks who are more used to a digital format. Aimed at a slightly more family audience - Adults £18, children over 8 £12.

Apologies again for the intrusion, but it seems awfully silly to be running these photography themed events and not to let the photographers know!
