Navigate at Schmidt Art Center...
Last week's opening reception at Schmidt Art Center was lovely.

On display are selected mixed-media map paintings (including my newest paintings!) along with low-relief topographic sculptures. During a residency, I had the unique opportunity to use an Omax waterjet, using elements of the earth (water and garnet) to cut. The process is the same as water erosion found in nature but greatly accelerated and concentrated. Inspired by topographical maps of places I had lived and painted, I created drawings that I then scanned and saved into DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) files. The waterjet cut each plywood section directly from these DXF files. Afterwards, I painted and assembled these into low-relief topographic sculptures. Each sculpture is four layers deep.

Navigate will be on exhibit until June 21, 2013.

Missouri Artists on Main...
I had a wonderful time as guest artist at Missouri Artists on Main earlier this month, too.
The Painting Workshop I taught sold out, and the participants did an AMAZING job on their paintings!! Lots of collage and mixed media, textures and layers, Wood Icing and stencils, patterns, shapes, marks and surfaces! These participants rocked!

Review of Art Quilt Maps...
Being a huge fan of Valerie Goodwin's map quilts, I was super-excited to receive an advanced copy of her new book Art Quilt Maps: Capture a Sense of Place with Fiber Collage – A Visual Guide– A Visual Guide!

You can read my review of her brilliant new book here.

Artistcellar Guest...
Lastly, I was delighted to be a guest blogger recently for Artistcellar and share the process behind my recent mixed-media map painting entitled A Balance (pictured above)! You can check out the post and the step-by-step process here.

Wishing you all the best this summer,
Mary
